GUIDELINES FOR FORMAL WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

<< Back to Jay Chaskes page

  1. All assignments must be typed double space.

  2. All assignments must be accompanied by at least two rough drafts that do not have to be typed.

  3. You are required to review at least one draft of each assignment with me prior to submitting the final version. My intention is to help you clarify the objectives of the assignment as well as discuss the logic and coherence of your argument. This is one of those "safe" places to make a mistake. So much of the learning process involves making mistakes!

  4. Your assignments will be evaluated for their coherence, literacy, and sociologically analytical content. I will tolerate only a minimum number of grammatical and spelling errors.

  5. If you use the words of another author without quotation marks and the proper form of citation, I will treat such an event as plagiarism, no matter how naive your intent. Plagiarism is a serious breach of the rules of academic honesty and can result in a failing course grade.

  6. You will be required to collaborate with others in the class when preparing a written assignment, including the sharing of rough drafts. HOWEVER, THE PREPARATION OF THE VERSION I WILL EVALUATE MUST BE YOUR WORK ALONE!

  7. Please make a copy of the assignment before you submit it to me (You never know when a starving goat might get loose and eat your original!).

  8. When submitting rewrites, be sure to staple the original-with my comments on it-to the back of it.

  9. DEADLINES WILL BE STRICTLY OBSERVED. I reserve the right to refuse to accept a late submission or to penalize the student with a reduction of grade. If you think you are going to have a problem meeting the deadline, I should be the first person to know, and I should know in advance of the deadline.
