Honoring an Exceptional Educator: CMSRU Students Present Excellence in Teaching Award to Beloved Faculty Member

Dr. Kocher

Today, students at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University awarded the 2013-1014 Excellence in Teaching Award to William Kocher, MD, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Kocher is the inaugural recipient of this honor, which will be bestowed annually by the student body.

The CMSRU Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member who embodies the CMSRU ideals of mentorship, professionalism, and life-long learning. Dr. Kocher was unanimously nominated as the first recipient of this award in recognition of his tireless contributions to medical education and his dedication to the community, both inside and outside the classroom.

According to Rebecca Lee, student representative from the Class of 2016, Dr. Kocher was warmly praised in the nominations. "Students cited the energy and passion he brings to teaching, the open and safe learning environment he fosters, and his concern for the well-being of each and every student as the reasons he should be the inaugural recipient of this prestigious award," she said. "Dr. Kocher is one of the most talented and valued faculty members at our school, and we are thrilled to honor him in this way."

The students held a special assembly to present Dr. Kocher with a commemorative plaque in recognition of the award, and his name will be the first to be engraved on a permanent installation that will be displayed inside the school. All 114 students attended today’s ceremony, along with CMSRU deans and faculty.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized in this way. It has been my privilege to participate in your education thus far," Dr. Kocher told the students."We are fortunate at CMSRU to have so many dedicated, outstanding faculty, so I would like to accept this award on behalf of all of them."

CMSRU opened in summer 2012. It is the first new medical school in New Jersey in over 35 years and the only four-year MD-granting medical school in South Jersey. Rowan University and The Cooper Health System partnered in June 2009 to establish CMSRU. Located in Camden, NJ, CMSRU will help address the physician shortage locally and nationally, and improve healthcare throughout the region. CMSRU received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in June 2011.
