Resources for Rowan Staff

Consultation
CPSC staff serve as consultants to individuals and groups on the Rowan campus.

Consultation involves sharing knowledge and expertise to assist others in responding effectively to mental health issues impacting the campus community.

Consultation may involve a single meeting with a faculty member who has concerns about a particular student. It may involve an ongoing relationship, for example with a student organization seeking assistance in helping members learn to communicate more effectively together.

Critical Incident Response Team
The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was established in 1997 to provide a form of crisis intervention specifically designed to help the Rowan community cope with highly stressful or traumatic events.

The team provides a structured, supportive process during which time effected members of the community are able to share information, reactions and resources. This process helps to normalize people’s reactions and promote healing.

The purpose of the service is to give the community a place to express their reactions thereby minimizing the harmful effects of traumatic and stressful events.

CIRT is made up of administrators, professional staff, faculty and support staff from across the Rowan University campus. These team members are trained in crisis response.

The team is available for both death notifications and trauma support meetings. Meetings are approximately 2 hours long.

The team can arrange a meeting site and time or be available at a normally scheduled time/place for your class/group.

Outreach
CPSC staff will provide workshops and other educational presentations to the university community. Presentations can be tailored to meet your group’s particular needs.

Offerings include a variety of topics such as: Eating & Body Image, Gay & Lesbian Concerns, Relationship Issues, Diversity Awareness, Suicide Awareness & Prevention, Depression, and At Risk Students.

For more information, contact Cynthia Kammer, Director of Outreach Services, at 256-4222 or kammer@rowan.edu.

How to Refer

  • Find out enough about the student's problem to be able to make the best referral. Talk about your concerns in behavioral terms.
  • Involve the student in the process. Discuss feelings about the referral (i.e. objections or fears). This allows the student to voice concerns before the appointment. Let the student know that seeking help is a sign of strength.
  • Tell students what you know about the CPSC and remind them that counseling is free and confidential.
  • Go slowly--except in an emergency. The student needs to understand that it is always his/her choice to accept or refuse the referral.
  • If the student is highly motivated to seek counseling, let him/her make the appointment with the Center.
  • If the student seems a bit reluctant to take the initiative, call the Center while the student is with you.
  • If the student is in immediate crisis, walk the student to the Center or call to ask for a counselor to come to you. Please call before bringing a student to the Center to ensure a counselor is available.
