Improving Learning Mathematics through Technology - New Date added - 1/11/10
Presenter – Bill Smith 1/11/10 ($125) 8:30 am to 3 pm
The past decade has seen an enormous increase in new technologies available for teaching and learning mathematics. In addition to graphing calculators and dynamic geometry software, mathematics educators must now consider the classroom impact of computer algebra systems, tablet computers, display technologies, dynamic handheld tools, the expanding resources of the Internet and World Wide Web, communications resources (including e-mail, blogging, discussion boards, and chat rooms), and classroom management systems.
This workshop will focus on the use of the Smart Board, the document camera, graphing calculators, and Excel spreadsheets as tools to facilitate learning in grades 3 through 8. Learning activities used will attempt to clarify how these technologies can help teachers differentiate instruction, promote classroom discourse, invite students to be active participants in their learning, and encourage inquisitiveness and discovery.
The workshop will be problem-based and will involve teachers as active participants. As much as possible, teachers will use the technologies in a hands-on manner.
