History of the Assessment Consulting Team

In 2002, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education adopted revised standards for accreditation to reflect its belief that higher education institutions could best assure quality if permitted to define their own learning goals, determine their own methods of measuring success, and create their own plans for implementing their findings.  Implicit in this philosophy is the idea that assessment should be an authentic and ongoing part of the education process, not an artificial and periodic exercise in generating data.  By empowering institutions to develop their own assessment principles and practices, the Middle States Commission intends to promote a faculty-owned rather than a report-driven process.

To support ongoing efforts to enhance assessment on the Rowan University campus and respond to the new standards, the Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee (LOAC), a standing committee of the Rowan University Senate, developed a mission and strategy for promoting a learning-centered culture. At the center of this culture, serving as a resource and a catalyst for change, is ACT.  First and foremost, ACT is a peer consulting group charged with building trust and investment in assessment.  Its other chief function is to acquire and disseminate expertise on assessment methods and tools.
