One Book Book Club
Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom by John Bean is now out in a new edition. “The book presents a wide variety of strategies for stimulating active learning and for coaching writing and critical thinking - offering advice for how to design courses, structure assignments, use class time, and critique student performance and model critical thinking” (back cover). This book can be yours by simply joining the Faculty Center book club and pledging to participate in one discussion session. Keep learning! Keep growing!

Mid Semester Focus
The MSF on teaching and learning is a mid-semester evaluation technique that provides instructors with rich and meaningful feedback from their students regarding the learning environment in a course. The process is entirely voluntary and data confidential.
How does it work?
A trained faculty consultant from the Faculty Center contacts the instructor prior to the group to discuss basic course information and any concerns the instructor might have about the course. The consultant then comes to the class and spends 30-45 minutes conducting the focus group with the class. During the session, the consultant guides the students through a discussion based on these questions related to learning:
- What is working in this class?
- What is not working?
- What are some suggestions you have to improve this class?
- What are YOU doing that is working for you?
- What are you NOT doing?
- What could you do to improve your learning in this course?
The students explore these questions individually and in small groups, write their responses on the board, and then the consultant facilitates a discussion with all of the students regarding the information on the board. After the session, the consultant meets with the instructor to discuss the feedback.
Feedback obtained from the session can be used to enhance classroom interactions, student learning, and teaching strategies. Most importantly, the instructor receives feedback during the semester, when the instructor can engage students in the feedback loop, not at the end of the semester when the students have moved on.
MSFs for spring 2012 will be scheduled between Feb 20 - March 9. Space is limited; appointments will be made on a first come basis.
Faculty Learning Communities
A Faculty and Professional Learning Community (FPLC) is a cross-disciplinary group of eight to twelve people who come together for a year-long adventure in active, collaborative, and dialogic learning. FPLC participants become a community of learners, not a decision-making body, task-force, or committee.
A community of learners is distinct from other university groups in that it offers opportunities for:
- Professional Development - developing, honing, and practicing the skills of life-long learning
- Community Building - breaking down the barriers of specialization and engaging with stakeholders across the institutions
- Reflective Learning - gaining a deeper understanding of the many ways of thinking about a phenomenon, experiencing cross-disciplinary dialogue
Faculty and Professional Learning Communities at Rowan University include:
New Faculty Learning Community, Kelly Duke-Bryant, facilitator
Rowan Seminar (RS), Rory McElwee, facilitator
For more information, or to join a group, please contact Dr. Deb Martin at 856-256-4079 or martind@rowan.edu.
RU Safe
The safe zone training involves learning about, providing a safe space for, and being a resource for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students on campus. The training is completely voluntary, and those who choose to go through it are invited, but not required, to display a sticker indicating their willingness to provide a safe space in their office and to become a resource for these students. For more information on this program, please contact Dr. MaryBeth Walpole at walpole@rowan.edu or 856-256-4706.
