Rowan University EMS

The Student Volunteer Emergency Squad (26-8) delivers basic life supoprt and pre-hospital care to students, faculty and visitors to Rowan University and it's many housing and academic buildings. We continually strive to deliver excellence in patient care and compassion for those we treat. We are the primary response agency to medical emergencies and work in cooperation with Rowan University Department of Public Safety. In addition, the Squad provides community awareness training in first aid, CPR and Fire & Life safety through various activities throughout the year. We commit to serving our University community through volunteer service.

Off Campus Response
Rowan EMS does not respond off-campus, unless specifically authorized by the Associate Director of Public Safety, or higher University authority. For example, a request is made by Glassboro Emergency Management to the University.

Hours of Operational Coverage
The squad is on "All-call" from 7am - 6pm. During all-call, any available member of the squad responds to the call. Class schedules of members during the hours of day limit the squad's ability to respond; hence an all-call mode is necessary. Duty Crew assignments run from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00a.m. During duty-crew assignments an assigned crew of personnel responds to calls for service. Weekends are also covered by a duty-crew.

Out of Service Periods
The Squad goes out-of-service for any holiday/breaks longer than 3 days, whenever residence halls are closed; from graduation day until the start of the next Fall semester; or at other times deemed appropriate. When the Squad goes out-of-service, the Student Health Center, Public Safety, and Gloucester County 911 PSAP are notified. Whenever the Squad is out of service, or not available, all requests for Emergency Services are routed to the County 911 PSAP.

Transportation Policy
It is the policy of the Squad to provide transportation in case of an emergency to the Student Health Center, or the nearest appropriate hospital. Or, in unusual circumstances to another place of medical care or treatment; from University property. When practicable, if the Squad transports a patient to a place of medical care or treatment, it will attempt to provide return transportation. However, return transportation is not a primary responsibility of the Squad. Therefore, patients may need to seek return transportation to the campus though other resources (e.g. public safety, friends, etc.).

Staffing
The Squad has a current membership of approximately 32. Of that number, approximately 20 are New Jersey Department of Health Certified Emergency Medical Technicians "B". Any NJEMT certified within the last 5 years also had a certification in Dibrillation. The Remaining members are trained in basic First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. The Squad's Advisor and Assistant Advisor are also EMTs.

Membership is open all student and employees of the university. However, employee members may not become regular, voting members or hold an office. To apply for membership on the squad, please click here to download an application and return it to the Student Health Center in Linden Hall or email one of the officers for more information. Contact information can be found by clicking the "Officers" button at the top of the page.

The Squad is a Basic Life Support unit, operating: A 1997 Ford E-350, Type III Horton 353 Mini-mod Ambulance. The ambulance was purchased by the Student Government Association.

The Squad also has a 1996 Chevy Lumina Quick Response Vehicle (QRV) provided by the University. It's used for routine transportation requests, quick responses and training or liaison work.

We have a Laerdal Heartstart FR2+ Defibrillator and the accessories to support its use. This unit was funded 50% by a single donation from a concerned Alumni and the University Administration; through the efforts of the Assoc. Director, Public Safety/Chief EMS. In 2001, through the efforts of the membership and our Advisor, we recieved a grant from the State of NJ to purchase a second Semi-Automatic Defibrillator, which is currently used in the ambulance.

We share resources such as CPR trainers, radios, etc. with the Associate Director of Public Safety.

For additional information please call the squad office at extension 4292, or our advisor, Rich Wadleigh, at extension 4567. If you are interesting in becoming a volunteer member of the Squad, print out a membership application and return it to the Student Health Center in Linden Hall.
