Rowan EMS is the primary response agency to Medical Emergencies and is a Unit of Rowan Public Safety. We work alongside Underwood Memorial Hospitals Paramedic unit and other emergency medical services in Gloucester County.
Rowan EMS is one of the longest serving University EMS units in New Jersey. We provide 24/7 coverage for all medical emergencies as well as providing EMS services for sporting events, concerts, charity events and large events such as move in weekend and commencement. In the 2009-2010 academic year EMS logged 596 call for service.
In 2009 EMS added a new ambulance to its existing fleet and conducted much needed upgrades to our existing ambulance. Rowan EMS presently operates two fully equipped Basic Life Support Ambulances, two EMS Bike Patrol Teams and one EMS response car fully equipped to treat medical and trauma Emergencies. All EMS vehicles are Defibrillator equipped. Rowan Public Safety also maintains a fleet of 2 EMS vehicles staffed by EMT Certified Officers that work alongside Student Volunteers providing Emergency Medical Response to the University Community.
In 2011, Rowan University was activated as a regional evacuation shelter during hurricane Irene. Rowan became a temporary residence for 1100 to 1200 evacuees from the Atlantic City area. A number of the displaced persons came with significant medical issues. A triage room was quickly set up with assistance for various hospital and health agencies throughout the Gloucester County area. Rowan EMS provided support for the entire operation and transported 38 patients in 48 hours during the height of the storm. To recognize the effort of the volunteer crews during the storm all Rowan Ambulances now display a hurricane symbols on the doors with Irene 2011-38-48
In 2012 Rowan EMS started the process of replacing our 1997 Ford Ambulance with a new GMC Type III designed to match our 2009 GMC. Both Trucks were designed with significant input from our volunteer student members right down to the paint and lettering. We also are involved in the design of a new EMS station that will be located in the rear of Winnans hall on Rt. 322. This project includes a Lounge area, training /meeting space shower room, supply room and a new office area for the Volunteer squad officers. The project also includes a garage to house both ambulances and oxygen storage. This project is scheduled for completion in October 2013.
All students are welcome to become a member of Rowan EMS. Training will be provided that will include Basic First Aid and Professional Rescuer CPR, Emergency Vehicle driver, Blood Born pathogen training and assistance with New Jersey Emergency Medical Technician training and certification.
