Welcome to English Language Programs.

We offer 3 programs for international students:

The Intensive English Language Program (IELP)

Located in Camden, New Jersey, and directly across from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the IELP at Rowan University is ideally located to provide international students with an intimate learning environment along with access to a thriving and exciting city life. Teachers and students take regular trips to Philadelphia to explore the cultural and historical sites and to partake in the city’s world-renowned culinary delights.

The IELP is a non-credit program designed for international students who need to improve their academic English proficiency in order to attend university in the United States. This is a five-level non-credit program in which students take classes ranging from Intensive Reading & Writing to American Literature and Oral Presentation Skills.

Students who successfully complete the IELP may matriculate into the university without the requisite TOEFL/IELTS scores. Successful completion of the IELP is determined by:

  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 in the IELP
  • A minimum exit score on the IELP Exit Test
  • Passing evaluation of IELP portfolio by Writing Arts and IELP faculty
  • Adherence to university and IELP polices on academic integrity and attendance

Estimated Costs* for the IELP (per academic year):

  • Tuition: $6,200
  • Insurance: $1,200
  • Housing/Meal Plan: $10,000
  • Expenses: $5,000
  • TOTAL: $22,200

The Pathway Program for International Students

International students applying to the university for an undergraduate bachelor's degree with TOEFL scores between 65-78 and IELTS scores between 5.0 - 5.5, and meeting all other university admission requirements, may be accepted into the university. These students will be required to take 2 semesters of “Pathway” classes.

Pathway classes are credit-bearing academic English classes that will help students improve language skills during the first year of undergraduate studies.

The Pathway classes are offered for undergraduate credit only.

Admissions Requirements:

Students will follow the regular undergraduate admissions process for international students. Go to International undergraduate admissions for university admission requirements and the university application

Students who meet undergraduate admissions requirements and provide TOEFL or IELTS scores within the range below, will be required to take Pathway classes during their first year at the university.

• TOEFL score between 65 - 78 (inclusive)
• IELTS score between 5.0 - 5.5 (inclusive)

Unique Components of the Pathway Program:

• Students begin working on their bachelor’s degree while improving their academic English
• Students receive university admissions letter and I-20
• Students may be able to complete their bachelor’s degree in four years
• Students receive the extra support of a strong learning community

Conditional Admission Program

Rowan provides conditional admission to undergraduate and graduate students who meet all university admission requirements except language score requirements.


1. Apply directly to the university by going to:

Undergraduate admissions*: International Undergraduate Admissions

Graduate admissions**: International Graduate Admissions

2. If all admission requirements are met except language, applicants receive a conditional admission letter

3. Applicant will then apply to the IELP by going to: IELP Admissions

4. The IELP will isue the I-20 for Language Training. The I-20 will be transferred to the university upon successul completion of the IELP

*Conditionally admitted undergraduate students will have up to two (2) years to complete the IELP.

**Conditionally admitted graduate students have up to one (1) year to complete the IELP.
