Faculty Research
  • Since the summer 2005, the department’s Dr. Denyse Lemaire has organized and directed student summer trips, some of which offer college class credits. Her trips have taken students to China, Tibet, and Western Europe, and soon will include excursions to French Polynesia, New Zealand, and Australia. She also offers a three-week summer class on the geology of the National Parks that takes students on a geological adventure through nine western states. Our students have many opportunities to extend their horizons far beyond the limits of the American eastern seaboard.
  • Each spring Dr. Diane Markowitz's students get a glimpse into the life of a forensic anthropologist. With help from the New Jersey State Police, a portion of Rowan's campus is transformed into a realistic crime scene. Students must use the archeological techniques they've learned in class to excavate the buried "human remains" (a plastic skeleton), identify the body and determine the circumstances of death.
  • Three Rowan student volunteers recently traveled to La Serena, Chile, with Associate Professor of Archeology Dr. Maria Rosado to participate in the conservation and bio-archeological analyses of skeletal remains. Each student participant helped recover skeletal samples that provided more knowledge in the conservation and studying of other cultures.
