The Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Art offer a dual degree program leading to a Bachelors of Arts (BA) in Education and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art. This course of study provides students with a strong foundation in artistic knowledge and skills through a distinctive studio program engaging students at a high level of conceptual and technical processes for creating art while grounding them in educational theory and practice specific for the art classroom at all grade levels. Field experiences begin early in the sophomore year in actual school and art classroom settings, and culminate with a semester long clinical practice at both elementary and secondary grade levels in NJ public schools. Students who complete these requirements qualify for the New Jersey State Art Teacher Certification for Visual Art, grades K-12. Options for study abroad are available. Rowan University is a consortium member of Studio Arts Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy, and sends one student per year to attend SACI through the Seward Johnson Artist Development Travel Scholarship. Scholarship recipients take studio courses in a wide variety of media and courses in art history, restoration/conservation, Italian culture or language.

For more in-depth studio experiences, students enrolled in this degree program may choose to replace the BA in Art degree track by applying for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Arts at the end of their sophomore year.
