English Language Requirements

English Proficiency Scores

Proficiency in both written and spoken English is absolutely necessary for successful Undergraduate and Graduate study at Rowan University. Applicants whose first language is not English must document an acceptable level of English proficiency by submitting:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 79 or above (internet based test) or corresponding scores for the paper and computer based tests of: 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum level of 6.0 or above

Rowan’s school code for TOEFL is 2515. 

What if my scores are too low?

That is OK! Rowan University offers various English Language Programs to help aid international students who would still like to come to Rowan, but need additional English language skills.

Pathway Program (Bridge Program for Undergraduate Freshmen Only)

If you meet all the requirements for admission to Rowan except for an acceptable language test score, you may be eligible to enter the University through this program, which provides special for-credit English classes during your first year of study to help you improve your skills. The program is intended for students with a minimum TOEFL score of 70 (minimum writing band score 20) or IELTS minimum score of 5.5 (minimum writing band score 5.0). Conditional Admission (Undergraduate Freshmen & Transfer)

If you meet all the requirements for admission to Rowan except for an acceptable language test score (and your scores are not strong enough to take part in the Pathway Program), you may be offered Conditional Admission. In this case, you could take part in the Intensive English Language Program, which offers non-credit, face-to-face courses focusing on language skills, and upon completing the program successfully enter the university. Click here for an overview of Conditional Admission.

Intensive English Language Program (IELP)

The IELP is a non-credit program designed for international students who need to improve their academic English proficiency in order to attend university in the United States. International students who have not met the English proficiency requirement for the university admission may apply to the IELP. This is a five level non-credit program in which students take classes ranging from Intensive Reading & Writing to American Literature and Oral Presentation Skills. Students who successfully complete the IELP may matriculate into the university without the requisite TOEFL/IELTS scores. Click here for an overview of the Intensive English Language Program.
