Manager's Role

Managers:
Orientation is a process that begins with an employee's first experience at Rowan. It is the opportunity to create a good first impression, align employee expectations and goals, enable early contribution, enhance retention, and encourage integration into the Rowan environment. This process requires the active involvement of Rowan, the department and the employees. An employee’s department orientation is the most important step in the orientation process because it directly impacts an employee's performance and contribution to the department and Rowan.

The following links will help you, as a manager, create a successful first year at Rowan for your employees. If you have any questions about this information, please contact the HR Training Department at x4291.

IR Checklist

As soon as possible, preferably BEFORE the employee starts at Rowan, send an email to support@rowan.edu with the following information:

Telephone Access

  • New employee’s full name
  • Department name
  • Extension number
  • FOPAL account # where the phone will be charged

Computer Network Access

  • Full name
  • SS#
  • Department name

IR has a 3-5 business day turnaround. Our goal should be that employees have the tools to do their job within the first week of employment.

NOTE: If the position is NEW and there is no existing computer/phone, please build in additional time to order equipment and additional time for IR to set up phone lines, etc…

Performance Evaluation System (PES)

The PES system was created to enable you to create developmental dialogue about someone’s position at Rowan. It is an important tool and one that is regarded as very important for the university’s continued success. Please be sure to create the Initial PES within the first 30 days of employment. If you have any questions about this tool or the process in general, please contact Melanie Cloyd at x4291.

Assigning a Buddy

A buddy is someone who partners with a new employee during their first 3 months of employment. They offer advice and guidance to help foster and promote the professional development of a new employee. The buddy knows the ropes, so to speak, and can be an effective source of advice and encouragement. The buddy can offer seasoned experience in the form of training and socializing the new employee to the Rowan community. With an effective buddy, a new employee will quickly become a contributing member of your department.

Buddy Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrates high performance
  • Is given time to be accessible to the new employee
  • Is skilled in the new employee’s job
  • Is proud of the organization
  • Is a peer of the new employee
  • Has patience and good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Wants to be a “buddy”
  • Is a positive role model (well regarded and accepted by current employees)
  • Has been selected in advance and trained in “buddy” responsibilities*

*Attached is a link to the buddy training information that is required prior to making someone a buddy. If you have any questions, please contact the training department at x4291.
