When purchasing new equipment, here's some questions you should ask:

  • What type of warranty comes with my system?
  • Where can I take my computer if it needs service?
  • What software comes with the machine?
  • How long will it take for me to get the machine?
  • Is the main memory expandable to at least 1 GB?

Buy vs. Lease

We do not recommend leasing a computer. Prices have drop signifigantly over the last couple of years, which has made purchasing a much better option. Any machine that you purchase now should be more than adequate for your four years of college.

Retail Store vs. Mail Order

Some companies only sell through mail order, while others only sell through retail outlets such as major electronics stores. Wherever you choose to purchase your machine, you should buy only from a company that is nationally recognized with a good reputation for reliability and serviceability. Also, you want to consider the type of warranty you are getting with the machine. Remember that purchasing from a store will often require you to take the machine back to them for service.
