Search Engines

     GPO Access - A multi-search database provided by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) and the place to begin searching for current U.S. legislative, judicial and administrative government information.  Full-text searching is available for many publications including the Federal Register, U.S. Code, Congressional Record, Supreme Court decisions, the Code of Federal Regulations,  and the Core Documents of U.S. Democracy.

    CGP (Catalog of U.S. Government Publications) --- the finding tool for federal publications that includes descriptive records for historical and current publications and provides direct links to those that are available online. Users can search by authoring agency, title, subject, and general key word, or click on "Advanced Search" for more options

          NET (New Electronic Titles) - Monthly list of new electronic titles cataloged by GPO, accessible from the New Titles section of the Catalog of U.S.
Government Publications (CGP).

     Google Uncle Sam - An easy-to-search database focusing on U.S. federal, state, and local government.Web sites.

     GovEngine.com - Comprehensive Directory of Official Federal, State, and Local Government and Court Links.

     INFOMINE - features organized access to important university level research and educational tools on the Internet. INFOMINE is notable for its collection of annotated and indexed links. The site is built by librarians and is maintained by the University of California, Riverside.

     SearchMil.com - Limits searches to .mil sites (e.g., Department of Defense).

           The Defense Science Board - All reports can be found here.

           Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC)  

     USA.Gov  (formerly FirstGov) - The main portal for U.S. Government information, it provides straight-forward access to many online federal government resources. Includes links to state and local government sites.  "FAQ's" have been integrated into the search returns.  Also, when searching for a Senator or Representative, there will be a special spotlight feature at the top of the search results that includes contact information, voting records, and other helpful links about the Senator or Representative

Indexes/Databases

     Catalog of U.S. Government Publications -A searchable database providing bibliographic information for U.S. Government publications beginning with January 1994. Includes links to electronic titles.

     Consumer Information Center: Pueblo, Colorado - view (free) or order ($) copies of hundreds of books on a wide variety of topics - information on such topics as buying a home, buying a car, planning for retirement, medication tips from the Food and Drug Administration, request for earnings and benefit estimate statement useful for figuring social security benefits, and many more. 

     CyberCemetery  - a partnership between the University of North Texas Libraries and the U.S. Government Printing Office to ensure permanent public access to the websites and publications of those U.S. government agencies and commissions no longer in existence.

     FedWorld - A central access point for locating and acquiring scientific, technical, and business-related government information. However, many of these documents are fee-based.

     Geodata.gov - portal of the Geospatial One-Step electronic government initiative for finding and using geographic data - managed by the U.S. Geological Survey. 

     MERLN (Military Education Research Library Network)  MERLN is home to the Military Policy Awareness Links - MiPALs - which provide direct access to defense-related U.S. policy statements on selected key topics.

     NTIS  - National Technical Information Service (Dept. of Commerce) - NTIS now makes its entire database back to 1964 available for free.

     Occupational Outlook Handbook - a nationally recognized source of career/occupational information 

             Career Guide to Industries - a companion to Occupational Outlook Handbook

The Science Accelerator - another OSTI tool for searching across collections of the DOE scientific and technical information, including

           The Information Bridge  - indexes the full text DOE (Department of Energy) report literature from the early 1900s onward. 

Everything in the Information Bridge is included in Energy Citations Database, including the links to the full text.

           Energy Citations Database - ECD covers the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) from 1948 to 1974, the ERDA (Energy Research and Development Agency) from 1974 to 1976 and the DOE (Department of Energy) from 1977 to the present. ECD includes the technical reports from these agencies announced in Nuclear Science Abstracts and Energy Research Abstracts. From 1948 to 1976, ECD is the comprehensive index to worldwide nuclear science literature. In addition to the scientific and technical literature from the U.S. government, other governments, universities, and research organizations, ECD for this period covers books, conference papers, patents and journal literature.

           DOE Data Explorer (DDE) - a unique tool that identifies collections of Department of Energy sponsored numeric files, figures and data plots, multimedia

                       and images, computer simulations, specialized databases, and interactive data maps.

           Federal R&D Project Summaries - search for scientific concepts, find emerging trends and techniques, identify specific projects and investigators.

           DOE R&D Accomplishments

     Science.gov - Gateway to authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. Government agencies including research and development results.

It searches across the DOE (Deparatment of Energy), DOD (Department of Defense), NASA and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) databases that were previously covered by the GrayLit Network.

     STAT-USA - the source for current and historical business, trade and global economic information produced by the United States Government.

   Full access is available in Electronic Reference Room 218, Computer terminals 1 & 2.

     STINET - Scientific and Technical Information Network - the online catalog of DTIC (Defense Technical Information Center)

                         DTIC is the military equivalent of NTIS  

     Thomas - The best source of legislative information on the internet.  Provides full text of each bill introduced, beginning with the 101st Congress.  It lists public laws by number, roll call votes, information on House and Senate committees and their reports.  Has links to both chambers, and to legislative, executive, and judicial branch agencies.

World Digital Library - a website that features unique cultural materials from libraries and archives from around the world. The site includes manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, prints and photographs. It provides unrestricted public access, free of charge, to this material.

     U.S. Blue Pages - Directory of United States federal, state, and local government offices.

     U.S. Government Manual - provides comprehensive information on the agencies of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches. including information on quasi-official agencies, international organizations in which the United States participates, and boards, commissions, and committees, internet addresses, directors, and information about what each one does
