Salvatore A. Scarpa
Conductor, University Orchestras
Salvatore Scarpa is Director of Orchestras at Rowan University, where he conducts the University Chamber Orchestra, Community Orchestra, Opera Company productions, and teaches conducting. In addition to teaching at Rowan, he is Assistant Conductor of the Pennsylvania Ballet, Music Director/Conductor of Bel Canto Lyric Opera Company, Conductor of the Atlantic Brass Band, and with his wife Christine, Director of Liturgical Music at Sacred Heart Church in Vineland, NJ.
He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, where he studied conducting with David Effron and Donald Hunsberger, and Rowan University, where he studied conducting with Joel Thome. Mr. Scarpa is also a composer who has written works for the Empire Brass, the Philadelphia Pops, and the International Trombone Association among others. Recent compositions include dramatic and dance scores for productions of Antigone and The Snow Queen. A member of a generation of musicians at home in the worlds of classical and jazz music, he was the winner of a Down Beat Magazine "dee bee" award for Best Jazz Arrangement, and in 1988 was asked to be a member of the first BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. In 1991 he was Assistant Music Director for the Grammy Award winning production Zappa's Universe.
He has served on the faculties of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Camden County College, and has also served as conductor of Rowan University's Chamber Choir, Choral Union, Wind Ensemble, and as Assistant Chair of the Department of Music.
In 1993 he was honored as the New Jersey Musician of the Year.
