The Certification Program in Supervision
This program meets the requirements specified by the State of New Jersey and is designed to serve the person who has already earned a master’s degree in some field, but who wants to qualify as a supervisor of instruction in the public schools; one who is charged with authority and responsibility for the continuing direction and guidance of the work of instructional personnel.
Requirements for admission to the certification program:
1. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university (institution to send official transcript to the Graduate School) or concurrently matriculated in a M.A. degree program at Rowan University.
2. A New Jersey teacher’s certificate or its equivalent, other than emergency or provisional. (Submit copy to the Graduate School.)
3. One year’s successful teaching experience is required for admission to the program (Three years’ successful teaching experience and a master’s degree are required for state certification as supervisor. Submit your resume to the Graduate School.)
4. Two letters of recommendation from the candidate’s superintendent, supervisor, or professional colleague attesting to his/her potential as a supervisor. (Submit to the Graduate School.)
5. A written statement outlining your professional objective and what you expect to achieve through enrollment in graduate studies. (Submit to the Graduate School.)
6. An interview with and/or positive recommendation of the program advisor.
7. Approval of department chairperson.
8. Approval of the Dean of Education.
9. Approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.

Other coursework oriented directly toward supervision and curriculum
development in particular grade levels, or in specific subject fields may
also be applied as restricted electives.
Examples of such courses are: Administration and Supervision
of School Reading Programs (0830.540), Administration and Supervision
of Education for the Handicapped (0810.578), Curriculum and Instruction
in Special Education (0808.515), and Practicum/Seminar in Administration/Supervision
I or II (0827.600 or 0827.601).*

(A) Required for certification
(B) This course is offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction - Secondary/Foundations of Education.
(C) This course is offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction - Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
(D) To be scheduled during the first 6 semester hours of coursework.
* Only one of these courses may be applied to the program for supervisor’s certification.
Requirements for the Certification in Supervision
1. Student must substantiate that three years of successful teaching experience, or its equivalent, have been served.
2. A student must pass a minimum of 12 semester hours, including approved transfer credits, with a grade-point average of 3.0 or above. A maximum of 3 s.h. of approved course work may be accepted in transfer from another institution.
3. Evidence of the completion of a master’s degree.
4. The program must be completed within a period of six years from the
date of matriculation.
