
Thirty-four years ago transfer Delta students from Ohio University to Rutgers University, Camden Campus, spearheaded the chartering of the eighth chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the State of New Jersey. Roseann E. Brown-Stratford and Debra Taylor-Atkins , in June of 1971, with assistance of South Jersey Alumnae Chapter and Soror Marva L. Scott, Eastern Regional Director, chartered a city-wide collegiate chapter with ten Rutgers' undergraduate students.

Chartered at a time when Soror Frankie M. Freeman, 14 th National President (1967-1971) most noted for her work with the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and the ushering of the 31 st National Convention in Houston , Texas in August in 1971.
In the Spring of 1972, with Lillian P. Benbow as National President, Theta Chi Chapter initiated its second line with one student from Rowan (formerly Glassboro State College) and two students from Rutgers University . Subsequently, the chapter continued to grow with intake of three members in 1973 (one attending Rowan and two attending Rutgers); and during the Spring 1974, 12 students from Rutgers , Rowan and Stockton State College.
Over the next thirty-four years, Theta Chi Chapter has initiated into our illustrious sisterhood more than 379 young college women with the largest intake line of 29 members in the Spring of 2004.
