The Mock Wedding
On February 17, 2005, GSA, along with LUCY (Rowan's Women's Rights organization) held a "mock" gay wedding in the student center pit. The formal wedding and reception attracted many students who witnessed the processional, ceremony, and recessional. Afterwords, everyone in attendance participated in a reception that lasted into the night. Among the cake cutting, ceremony and dancing, Kate (one of the mock brides) gave a speech thanking all for attending. She spoke of hoping to make this "mock" wedding a rehearsal for her own wedding someday. She then dropped down on one knee and asked for Liza's hand in marriage. (Liza was the other mock bride and Kate's real-life beloved).
This "mock" wedding was put on in hopes of demonstrating the idea that true marriage love, no matter whom it is between, is beautiful, normal and valid. With over 75 students in attendance, GSA and LUCY consider the point well taken.
