YoucouldfeeltheforcebehindProjectENERGYExploringNewEnergy-alternativesRelevanttoGenerationYwhichbringstogetherhighschoolstudentspartofRowansCamdenDualEnrollmentProgramledbyDr.KimberlyWhiteheadDirectorofAcademicServicesandCHAMPCreatingHigherAspirationandMotivationProjectmanagedbyWinonaWigfallDirectorofPre-CollegePrograms.TogethertheywillcollaboratewithTabbethaDobbinsAssistantProfessorofPhysicsandAstronomyonexcitingnewactivitiesatRowanincludingactiveparticipationfromthestudentsaswellasfromWhiteheadandWigfallwhowillhavealternativerolesasguestspeakersTappingIntoWaterasFutureEnergySourceandfacilitatorsduringthesix2-hourlongsessions.ProjectENERGYstudentswilllearnhowgreentechnologiesaredevelopedandwhatitmeansforsocietywhenthosetechnologiesenterthemarketplace.Ahydrogenfuelcellvehicleisusedtointroducestudentstotheideathatwaterasafuelsourcecouldpoweracarwithoutharmfulemissions.InadditiontolearningtheSTEMScienceTechnologyEngineeringandMathematicsaspectsofthistechnologystudentswillalsolearnaboutanddiscusssocietalimpacts.WhiteheadsgroupdiscussionWhatisFuelingyourFutureaidedthestudentsinidentifyingthe2CollegeofScienceandMathematics2connectionbetweentheirownfuturegoalsandthoseverbssuchascreatingdoinglearningplanningetc.whichprovideasourceofenergyforreachingthosegoals.GuestspeakerDeMondMillerSociologyProfessoratRowanchallengedstudentstogainaheadstartonthinkingabouthowtheymightparticipateinsustainability.Asaprojectoutcomestudentswillconstructawebsiteaimedathelpingotheryouthtolearnaboutsustainabilityandenergy.ThisprojectisapartofalargerresearchgranttitledCAREEREnhancingAtomicMobilityandDesorptionKineticsinMetalHydridesinwhichDobbinsresearcheshydrogenstoragematerialsforfuturealternativeenergyapplications.TheNationalScienceFoundationsNSFEarlyFacultyCareerDevelopmentprogramawardedthegrantin2009.DobbinsplanstorunProjectENERGYatRowanoverthenextthreeyears.Dr.DobbinsandstudentsassemblethehydrogenfuelcellcarStudentInternsatNationalLaboratoryAspartofher11-weekPhysicsAstronomysummerinternshipAshliNievesfromFranklinvillespentfourweeksattheArgonneNationalLaboratorysAdvancedPhotonSourceanationalsynchrotronx-rayresearchfacilityfundedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEnergy.DuringhervisitNieveswaspresentedtheopportunitytoperformasabeamlineassistantsponsoredbyagrantfromtheChemMatCARSbeamlineandtheUniversityofChicago.NievesworkedunderthedirectsupervisionofDr.JanIlavskyrenownedforUltrasmallAngleX-rayScatteringUSAXSmeasurementwheresheassistedusersoftheUSAXSinstrumentinperformingtheirexperiments.Nieveswasalsonameda2012MinorityinPhysicsScholarsponsoredbytheAmericanPhysicalSocietyAPS.Thescholarshipprovidesfundingandmentoringtominorityphysicsstudentshelpingthemenhancetheireducationandsuccessfullyprepareforavarietyofcareers.NievesofFranklinvillespentfourweeksataNationalLaboratorysponsoredbyagrantfromChemMatCarsbeamline
