continuedfrompage1InconjunctionthetenureandpromotiondocumentsofdepartmentshavebeenrevisedtoreflectthegreateremphasismanyfacultyplaceonresearchanewstrategicplanforthecollegewasdevelopedtoreflectournewidentityourvisionandmissionstatementswererevisedandacomprehensivesupportsystemwasdevelopedbytheCollegetomeetthesechangesassociatedwithexpandedresearchactivities.ThissupportsystemincludesthecreationofthepositionofAssistantDeanforResearchandGrantsadditionofpost-doctoralfellowstoseveralofthesciencedepartmentsdevelopmentofnewgraduateprogramsintroductionofthesummerresearchawardprogramsubstantialincreasesinnewfacultystart-upfundscontinuedandexpandedsupportforfacultyandstudenttraveltoprofessionalconferencesandcontinuedsupporttotheon-campusSTEMsymposium.Howevernopartofthissupportsystemwouldbeadequatewithoutthededicationandtalentofourfacultyandstudents.ThesecoordinatedeffortshavealreadyresultedinenhancementofscholarlyImpressiveNewRecordontheAcquisitionofGrantFundingactivityinvolvingmorefacultyandstudents.ThisisreflectedinareportpublishedrecentlybytheRowanUniversityOfficeofSponsoredProgramsOSP.Thisreportoffersdetailsaboutexternalfundsreceivedinacademicyear2011-2012.AccordingtothisreporttheformerCollegeofLiberalArtsandScienceswasawardedthelargestamountofnewgrantsamongallcollegesandschoolswithintheUniversitytotalingover3.7millionThatnumberrepresentsanewrecordfortheCollege.Thelargestportionofthistotalwasreceivedbythescienceandmathematicsdepartmentsandthegreaterpieceofthatwasforlab-basedresearch.ThisfigurereflectsamajorachievementbythefacultyandstudentsoftheCollege.KudostoeveryonewhocontributedtothissuccessWhyisthisachievementsomajor24Thereisnodoubtthatgettingexternalresearchgrantshasbecomeverycompetitiveinrecentyearsbutinperspectivejustthreeyearsagoin2009CLASgrantstotaledabout958000.ThisamounthassteadilyincreasedtothecurrentrecordfortheCollege.AswegoforwardthenewCollegeofScienceandMathematicsplansincludemeasurestoprovidesupportforfacultytosustainandgrowresearchandgrantactivities.Weplantocontinuetoincreasestudentinvolvementinresearchbuildingnewbridgesforstudentstoexperiencethenewrealitiesofmultidisciplinarycross-departmentalresearchprojects.Mostimportantlyweplantocontinuesupportingourfacultyinperformingworld-classresearchthatbenefitseveryoneintheCollegeandUniversity.Old-FashionStreamingStreamingtookonanewmeaningforthesebiologystudentsasProfessorCourtneyRichmondsEnvironmentalScienceclasstookadvantageofabeautifulfalldaytocollectdatafromRowansChestnutBranchcreekbed.Forherstudentsself-designedexperimenttheycollecteddatatotestthehypothesisthatthemorenativeplantspeciesarefoundinanareathefewernon-nativespecieswillbefoundinthesamelocation.Thestudentsthinkingwasthatthepresenceofnativeplantspecieslowerstheprobabilitythatnon-nativeplantspeciescanbecomeestablishedorcometodominateanarea.Dr.RichmondsclasstakessamplesfromChestnutBranchCreekCatherineYangProfessorandChairofChemistryandBiochemistryPhototakenbyCraigTerryCollegeofScienceandMathematics
