210CollegeofScienceandMathematicsTheCollegeofScienceandMathematicsisdevelopingnewpipelinesforamorediversepopulationofstudentstoincreasetheiraccesstotheeducationprovidedbytheCollegeandpropelthemintothescienceandtechnologyworkforce.TwopartnersinthiseffortareUnionCountyCollegeUCCandPassaicCountyCommunityCollegePCCCbothdesignatedHispanic-servinginstitutionsbytheUSDepartmentofEduca-tion.SupportedbyagranttoUCCfromtheDepartmentofEducationtwoUCCstudentsparticipat-edinasix-weeksummerprogramatRowanUniversityhostedbyourCollege.InMayandJune2013twostudentsworkedinthebiochemistrychemistryresearchlaboratoriesofDr.TimothyVadenandDr.LarkPerezrespectively.ThesummerprogramincludedtoursofcampusfacilitiesresearchtalksvisitstobothofRowansmedicalschoolsandafieldtriptotheChambersWorksfacilityofDuPont.AsaresultofthisexposureonestudenttransferredfromUCCtoRowanandasoffall2013isabiochemistrymajorintheDepartmentofChemistryandBiochemistry.AspartofagrowingrelationshipwithPCCCagroupof16oftheirstudentsvisitedRowansScienceHallinNovember.Thisgroupofstudentsattendedpresentationsfromdepartmentrepre-sentativesdescribingdegreeoptionsandopportunitiesinCSMresearchtalksbyseveralfacultyatouroffacilitiesandashowintheEdelmanPlanetarium.ThePCCCvisitandtheprogramwithUCCarepartofagrowingeffortbyCSMtorecruitamorediversepopulationofstudentsfromcountycollegesandhighschoolsintheregion.CSMLatinoInitiativeEngagesCountyCollegesInthewordsofTabbethaDobbinsassistantprofessorofPhysicsandAstronomytheRowanUniversitySci-enceHallwillbegettinganewwatercoolerthatshehopesallmajorswillbeabletocongregatearound.Thankstoagrantof280000fromtheNationalScienceFoundationNSFRowanUniversitywillbeabletopurchaseaCombinationRamanandFTIRSpectrometer.Notexactlyawatercoolerbutprettycoolanyhow.InFebruaryof2013DobbinsprincipalinvestigatorofthegrantandherinterdisiplinaryteamconsistingofphysicsprofessorsMichaelLimSamuelLoflandandXiaoHuandbiochemistryandchemistryprofessorTimothyVadensubmittedaproposaltoNSFrequestingfundstoreplacethecurrent20-year-oldspectrometer.StartingSeptember2013NSFgrantedRowan280000fortwoyearstowardsanewmachine.OurcurrentspectrometerstillgivesusinformationbutitisntsoeasytooperatesaidDobbins.Spectrometersprimarilyusealaserinordertoproducedata.Compoundsareplacedbeneathamicroscopewhereanexternallasershinesuponit.Theoutgo-inglaserbeamthencarriesinformationaboutthesampleintoaspectrometerchamber.Dataisthensenttotheuserwhousesittodeterminethebehaviorofthebondstypesofbondvibrationsbyanalyzingthechangesinlightpatterns.SomeofthepartsareoldandwhenweadjustthemitthrowsofftheentirecalibrationandaffectstheexperimentsaidDobbins.Thenewspectrometerfeaturessomethingthatthecurrentonedoesnotinthatallthelasersareconcealedwithinthemachineleavingnoexternallasermirrorsandlensestoadjust.ThismakesthemachinesomucheasiertouseandnowcanencompassalldifferentmajorssaidDobbins.Sheenvisionsmorepeoplecollaboratingonprojectsaswelldifferentschoolstointeractwiththemachine.AccordingtotheproposalsenttoNSFforthegrant24undergraduates16graduatesand216otherstudentsperyearwillbeaffectedbythenewspectrometerincoursesofferedincludingphysicschemistrybiologyfo-rensicscienceandelectricalandcomputerengineering.Thefacultydoesnotplanondis-posingoftheothermachinejustyetbuthasanotheroptioninmind.Becausethelasersareexternalontheoldspectrometerwecandoexper-imentswithitatwavelengthsnotavailableonthenewinstrumentsaidDobbins.Shealsobelievesthatthespectrometerwillopendoorstonewexperiences.Previouslywithnewequipmentsev-eralofourstudentshavebecomefluentinNewSpectrometerUseExpandstoDepartmentsSchoolsthetechnologyresultinginotheruniversi-tiesrequestingassistanceinoperatingandexperimentingtheirownmachinessaidDobbins.Amachinelikethisgiveshun-dredsofstudentstheopportunitytolearnsomethingnewandtakeitwiththemintotheirfutures.DobbinsspentlastJulyataconferencenearPisaItaly.TheGordonResearchConferenceonHydro-genStoragematerialsinvitedhertobeadiscussionleaderfortheconferencesproceedings.
