311CSMStudentAchievementsThispastMarchoutofapproximately150undergraduatestudentswhopresentedtheirresearchprojectsoverthefive-dayAmericanPhysicsSocietyconferenceinBaltimoreMarylandseniorphysicsmajorandmathematicsminorChristopherRotellaspresentationonOptimizingTiCfilmsforCDCapplicationsusingMagnetronSputteringwastherecipientoftheSPSUndergraduatePresentationAwardfromtheAmericanPhysicsSocietyandtheSocietyofPhysicsStudents.UndertheguidanceofDr.JefferyHettingerandDr.SamuelLoflandprofessorsfromtheDepartmentofPhysicsandAstronomywithsomeadditionalhelpfrominstrumentcoordinatorCarlLunkRotellaandtwootherstudentsJustinBuchic-chioandEmmaCorteswereabletosubmittheirprojectabstractbytheNovem-ber2012deadline.TheprojectentailedusingthetechniqueofMagnetronSputteringwhichisaprocessthattakesplaceinanultra-highvacuumchamberthatcanreachap-proximately1000degreesCelsius.WiththeuseofelectricandmagneticfieldsaswellasargongasthestudentsinjectedsmallpiecesoftitaniumontoacarbonsubstrateinordertoorchestrateareactionthatwouldcreateTitaniumCarbideTiCforthepurposeofcreatingaCarbonDerivedCarbideCDC.GearingupforthedigitalageNicholasSilvestrijuniorcomputersciencemajorputhiscyberskillstothetestontheCyberAcesExamatestopentotheentirecountrynotexclusionarytocollegestudents.Silvestriranked317outof3403nationalparticipantsalsoplacing20thoutof377stateparticipants.OutofallcollegetesttakersSilvestriplaced12thoutof141thetop91percentile.SilvestrireceivedtherecognitionofRochelleHendricksSecretaryofHigherEducationinaninvitationforhimtocompeteintheGovernorsCyberAcesNewJerseyChampionshipcompetitiontofindthebesttalentforcareersincybersecurity.SeniorphysicsmajorEmmaZulkerwasawarded2000fromtheNewJerseySpaceGrantNJSGAcademicYearFellowship--anawardinrecognitionofacademicexcellenceandresearch.CooperatingwiththeguidelinesthatrequiretherecipientstoworkonaNASAapprovedprojectZulkerwillbeworkingwithDr.JeffHettingerontheinvestigationofZ-Nfilmsandtheirpropertiesforpotentialuseinbiomedicalandnanotechnologyapplications.ChristopherRotellaseniorphysicsmajoralsoreceivedtheawardandwillberesearchingTheoreticalQuantumPhysicswithDr.HongLing.BothRotellaandZulkerwillpresenttheirresearchatastate-wideNJSGconferenceinofspring2014heldatRutgersUniversity.TheNewJerseySpaceGrantConsortiumwasestab-lishedin1991byagrantfromNASAwiththeobjectivesofdevelop-ingprogramstofurtheraero-spaceandSTEMeducationaswellasfosteringresearchanddevelopmentinNewJersey.SeniorphysicsmajorChrisRotellaStudentJustinBuchicchioreceivinghisawardattheannualbusinessmeetingheldinDecemberattheUniversityofPennsylvania.JustinBuchicchioaseniorphysicsmajorwasawardedthirdplaceintheStudentBestPosterAwardinThermalAnalysisForumatDelawareValley2013AnnualMeeting.AttheUniversityofPennsylvaniaLaboratoryforResearchontheStructureofMatterLSRMJustinandhispartnerJoeForysalsoaseniorphysicsmajorkepttheacademicpacewiththePh.D.graduatesfromtheUniversityofPenn-sylvaniaDrexelUniversityandTempleUniversityinthepostercompetitioninwhichthereweretenentrants.Bothstudentsweretheonlyunder-graduatesinthecompetition.
