39PsychProfessorReceives400KGranttoStudyAustismTreatmentSharingthevisionOneMouseataTimeWhilemostareusedtohookingupasinglemonitorortelevisionscreentoacom-puterCSMcomputersciencedepartmentisrethinkingthewayweinteractwithcomputersinthepresenceofagroup.UsinganovelapproachdevisedbyprofessorsGaneshBaligaandVasilHnatyshinwiththehelpofseveralundergraduateandgraduatestudentstheteamisworkingtorisetoadifficulttechnicalchallengehowcannumerousscientistsuseinrealtimeasharedmonitorwithmiceattachedtotheirownrespectivecomputersTheConcurrentMulti-cursorProjectledbyCSmajorsScottStevensonincoordinationwithKennethJamesLouisSzgalskyandWinstonCheongisacompletedsoftwarewhichallowsindividualcomputeruserstheirowncursoronalargerdisplay.Individualscannowmanagetheirownwindowswithouthavingtoswitchbackandforthbetweenthem.TheMulti-cursorprojectallowsformultiplecursorsormultipleuserstointeractononescreenbringingeveryonetogethertowardsacommongoal.Inacollaborativesettingofthisnatureindividualwindowownershipallowsuserstointeractwiththeirowndataandprotectitfromalterations.Thebenefitsofthesoftwarealsoallowindividualstocollaborateintimesofcriticalenvironmentssuchasnucleartestingfacilities.Thealleviationofmovingfromonestationtoanotherensuresthatoperatorscanmakequickerandmoreaccuratedecisionswhererapidanalysisisrequired.CSMPitchesNewHomeonCollegeRowHomecominghasbeenamainstayoncampusformanyyearsbutthisyearintroducedCollegeRowtoalumniandstudentswitheachcollegedisplayingtentsfulloffuninformationandniftygive-a-ways.MakingitsfirstappearancethisyeartheCollegeofScienceandMathematicshostedavarietyofscienceexperimentsthatintroducedkidstothefascinatingworldofscience.BiologymajorNicholasAlbertsonvolunteeredtoentertainalumniandtheirfamiliesbyconductingcrowd-pleasinginteractiveexperimentsthatusedvegetableoilwaterbottlesfoodcoloringandAlkaSeltzertablestomakecolorfullavalamps.ThroughoutthecrispfalldayalumniandfriendsstoppedbythetenttoconversewiththeDeanandlearnaboutthenewCollege.AtelescopedonatedbytheEdel-manPlanetariumwasraffledofftoluckyalumwinnerAmyJordanCarpinelli91aGeoscienceAstronomyInstructorforWashingtonTownshipPublicSchoolsandTeacheroftheYearSemi-Finalistin2009.MakesuretostopbyouttentnextOctobertoseewhatfunandexcitementourCollegehasplannedforyourfamily.Dr.MaryLouiseKerwinprofessorandchairoftheDepartmentofPsychologywasrecentlyawardeda2-year394000pilotgrantfromtheNewJerseyGovernorsCouncilforMedicalResearchandTreatmentofAutismandtheNewJerseyDepartmentofHealthtostudyparent-imple-mentedinterventionsforautism.AutismSpectrumDisorderASDiscurrentlythemostprevalentpediatricdevelopmentaldisorderintheUnitedStates.SymptomsofASDaregenerallyobservedbe-foreage3andincludedifficultiesinsocialinteractiondeficitsinverbalcommunicationandincreasedrepetitivebehavior.Earlyinterventionwithintensiveempiricallysupportedbehaviortherapieshasbeenshowntoimproveprognosis.Thehighprevalenceratesoftheautismandintensivetimerequirementsforinterventionhaveresultedinaneedforthedevelopmentofinnovativeservicedeliverymodels.KerwinsresearchteamincludingfellowpsychologyfacultymemberDr.MichelleSorethseveralexpertconsultantsandover20graduateandundergraduatestudentsisintheprocessofevaluatingtheeffectivenessofseveralpopularinterventionsspecificallydesignedforimplementationbyparents.TheresultsofthepilotstudymayprovidetherequiredpreliminarydataforasuccessfulgrantapplicationtotheNationalInstituteofHealthwhichwouldallowtheteamtoexpandresearchinautismtreatmentatRowanandofferfamiliesaffectedbyautismopportunitiestoaccesshigh-qualitysupplementaltreatmentservicesandtrainingsatnocost.IncidenceratesofASDhaveskyrocketedoverthelastdecade.NewJerseycurrentlyhasthesecondhighestrateofautisminthenationwithprevalenceestimatesashighas1in49childreninthestateidentifiedwiththedisorder.TheelevatedratesinthestatearelikelyduetoincreasedawarenessofthedisorderandtreatmentresourcesthatdrawfamiliesaffectedbyASDintoNewJersey.TheNJGovernorsCouncilforAutismwasestablishedtoencouragehighqualitybiomedicalandclinicalautismresearchinthestateandtheinitiativesofthecouncilarefundedbyaonedollarsurchargefrommotorvehicleviolationsandfinesatotalofapproximately4milliondedicatedtoautismresearchtreatmentandeducationeachyear.KerwinsprojectisthefirstGovernorsCouncilforAutismgrantawardedtoRowanUniversityandallowsforRowansCenterforBehaviorAnalysisPsychologyDe-partmentandbehavioranalyticfacultytocontinuetoreceiveregionalstateandnationalattentionforautismtreatmentandthetrainingoffuturebehavioranalysts.Tolearnmoreorhaveachildwhoyoususpectmayhaveaustismorcouldbenefitfromthisprojectvisitwww.rowan.eduabacenter.
