Civil and Environmental Engineering Technician, Part Time

We are seeking a qualified, competent and service oriented technician for Rowan University’s Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department, to meet the technical support needs of our growing faculty and student population, as well as our expanding laboratory facilities.

The CEE technician will work in a multidisciplinary environment that includes Chemical, Biomedical, Electrical and Computer, and Mechanical Engineering, however, the primary assignment is to Civil and Environmental Engineering. The technician must be available to work during late afternoon and evening hours (until 9 PM) Monday through Thursday, and some afternoon hours on Friday.

Responsibilities
• Responsible for laboratory setup for Civil and Environmental Engineering courses. Ensure all materials for laboratories are in stock. Assist faculty in designing and executing laboratories.
• Individual and group instruction for students, staff, and faculty on the proper use of instrumentation and maintaining stock of consumable materials associated with the instrumentation.
• Assist faculty in developing and fabricating research equipment.
• Assist students in design and prototyping for engineering clinic and class projects.
• Maintain safe conditions in laboratories; conduct safety training and assist instructors and students when safety issues arise.

Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science in civil engineering or equivalent, M.S. preferred.
• Experience in the use of civil and environmental engineering equipment.
• Experience with ASTM standard civil and environmental engineering lab experiments.
• Experience with lab safety protocols.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate will be able to:
• Multi-task on many difficult problems in a fast-paced environment;
• Advise students on their design and build projects;
• Assist students with freshman and sophomore clinic lab projects;
• Assist faculty with setup of various civil and environmental engineering labs;
• Develop a maintenance/calibration program and provide routine and preventative maintenance services for laboratory and field equipment and facilities;
• Maintain safety and regulatory standards including MSDS and NJRTK;
• Manage laboratory waste disposal according to institutional and regulatory protocol; and
• Supervise student workers in Civil and Environmental Engineering labs.

The successful candidate can be from a variety of backgrounds, including persons with industrial experience, or a civil engineer with a suitable background and necessary skill set.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technician, Part Time

We are seeking a qualified, competent and service oriented technician for Rowan University’s Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department, to meet the technical support needs of our growing faculty and student population, as well as our expanding laboratory facilities.

The ECE technician will work in a multidisciplinary environment that includes Civil & Environmental, Chemical, Biomedical, and Mechanical Engineering, however, the primary assignment is to Electrical and Computer Engineering. The technician must be available to work during late afternoon and evening hours (until 7:30 PM) Monday through Thursday, and some afternoon hours on Friday. The duties of the technician include working closely with students, faculty, and staff to

• Assist in development and maintenance of laboratory facilities to support innovative engineering education and research programs of the highest caliber;

• Assist students and faculty with the design, prototyping, fabrication, set-up, and operation of laboratory demonstrations and experiments for classes, engineering clinics and research projects;

• Help specify and procure laboratory equipment and supplies, maintain department inventory, ensure that necessary materials and supplies for labs are in stock;

• Assist in maintenance of departmental laboratory and field equipment and facilities; maintain safety and regulatory standards;

• Provide individual and group training to students, staff, and faculty on the proper and safe use of instrumentation;

• Assist faculty in developing, fabricating and maintaining research equipment;

• Install and maintain engineering software and conduct engineering software training for students;

• Oversee undergraduate student workers who may be hired to help with above duties.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in electrical and/or computer engineering or a similar / equivalent degree; and/or relevant work experience.
• Expertise in using, maintaining and troubleshooting commonly used ECE test / measurement instrumentation and equipment.
• Appropriate legal status to be employed in the United States.
Desired Qualifications

• Experience in object oriented programming (such as C#, C++, JAVA), and web based database design (such as MySQL, PHP, CSS, etc.)
• Experience with embedded design and rapid prototyping
• Experience in the use of electrical / computer engineering software for design and analysis (such as Matlab, Mentor Graphics, Code Composer Studio, Cadence, Synopsys, etc.)
• Work experience in an industrial or academic setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The successful candidate will be able to:
• Multi-task on many difficult problems in a fast-paced environment.
• Advise students on their design and prototyping projects.
• Assist students in practical applications of electronics, computer architecture, circuit theory and other areas of electrical / computer engineering theory.
• Use and maintain a wide variety of electrical & computer engineering research instrumentation.
• Perform routine electronic trouble shooting.
• Maintain department inventory.
• Communicate effectively and work synergistically with a diverse group of faculty, students, staff and other department and college constituents.

The successful candidate can be from a variety of backgrounds, including persons with industrial experience, or an electrical / computer engineer with a suitable background and necessary skill set. The position is part time, 25 hours of service per week.
