The College of Engineering - Engineering Management Program

Engineering Management Program

The goal of Engineering Management at Rowan University is to effectively prepare graduate students for management positions in the engineering profession by providing them with the necessary skill sets, knowledge, and training to succeed as engineering managers.  Rowan University offers graduate students two options in the area of engineering management:  a Master of Engineering Management program and a Specialization in Engineering Management which is part of the Master of Science in Engineering program.

Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Program

The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Program is open to students with bachelor’s degrees in engineering, engineering technology, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or computer science, or a bachelor’s degree in education with appropriate coursework in science and mathematics.  Applicants with other bachelor’s degrees will be considered for admission to the MEM Program on a case-by-case basis.  The undergraduate prerequisites for admission to the MEM Program are Chemistry I, Physics I, Calculus I, and Statistics I or the equivalent.

The MEM Program offers students four areas of specialization:  the Project Management Specialization, the Construction Management Specialization, the Engineering Entrepreneurship Specialization, and the Career-Based Specialization.

The MEM Program requires 30 semester hours of coursework.  The MEM courses are offered by the College of Engineering and the College of Business.  The core MEM courses, the MEM specialization courses, and most MEM elective courses are taught through the College of Professional and Continuing Education as 7-week hybrid courses with approximately 50% of each course taught online and 50% of each course taught on campus.  The remaining MEM elective courses are regular engineering graduate courses that are taught on campus.

The MEM courses that are planned for the next two years include two courses each during the fall and spring semesters (two back-to-back 7-week courses) and one course in the summer (one 7-week course) for a total of five courses per year.  Beginning in Fall 2008, plans call for all MEM courses to be taught through the College of Professional and Continuing Education as 100% online courses.

Engineering Management (EM) Specialization within the Master of Science in Engineering Program

The Engineering Management (EM) Specialization, which is part of the Master of Science in Engineering program, is open to students with bachelors degrees in engineering and to students with bachelors degrees in other areas who have taken (or will take) undergraduate math, science, and basic engineering courses (approximately 40 credits) roughly equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor of science in engineering degree program.

The EM Specialization has a 12-credit common core with two courses required in mathematics/computer applications (6 credits total) and two courses required in business (6 credits total).  The remaining 18 credits can be taken as coursework only, as a combination of coursework and masters thesis research (9 credits of each), as a combination of coursework and engineering project (12 and 6 credits, respectively), and as a combination of coursework and engineering clinic leadership (12 and 6 credits, respectively).

The courses taken for the EM Specialization can include on-campus graduate engineering courses only or a combination of on-campus courses, hybrid courses, and online engineering management courses (including the MEM courses described above).
