Elementary Chinese I
This is a beginning course in Chinese (Mandarin) for students
who have not previously studied the language. It covers the mechanics
of the Chinese language, including intensive practice in listening
comprehension and speaking. It will also introduce students to
basic Chinese reading and writing skills.

Elementary Chinese II
(Prerequisite: CHIN 07.101 or waiver)
This is a beginning course in Chinese (Mandarin) for students
who have taken Elementary Chinese I. It covers the mechanics of
the Chinese language including intensive practice in listening
comprehension and speaking. It will also offer exercises for students
to develop skills in reading and writing the language.

Intermediate Chinese I
(Prerequisite: CHIN 07.102 or waiver)
This intermediate level Chinese language course provides students
the opportunity to further develop their listening comprehension
and competence in spoken Chinese, their ability to engage in more
substantial conversations in a variety of learning, work, and
social settings. It will also help students build and utilize
their knowledge of the Chinese way of life and culture in conjunction
with learning the notions and functions of the language. The course
also focuses on students’ ability to read and write simple
Chinese prose for their communication needs.

Intermediate Chinese II
(Prerequisite: CHIN 07.201 or waiver)
Intermediate Chinese II continues to provide students the opportunity
to develop further their competence in listening comprehension
and in spoken Chinese, their ability to engage in more substantial
conversations regarding additional learning, work and social settings.
It will advance and enrich their knowledge of Chinese culture
enabling them to understand how to function in a culturally appropriate
manner and to develop and appreciate more subtlety in language
use. The course continues to help students improve their ability
to read and write simple Chinese prose for their communication
needs.
