Music EducationRowan's music education Program develops the prospective teacher as a musician through courses in the major and as an educator through the professional education core courses. The overall program emphasizes practical experience and objective research in education to create thoughtful decision makers in the music classroom. The primary goal of music education study at Rowan is to prepare outstanding teachers for grades K-12 in the schools of New Jersey. All undergraduate study leads to New Jersey certification; however, many of our graduates teach in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and other states. The music education student begins studies within the context of the larger school of education. These beginning courses orient the student to the cogent issues within the education process and lay the foundation of a substantive program. The student continues with courses on the psychology of the music learner and teaching methods. Students have a choice of instrumental, vocal of jazz in their major areas. Students culminate in a semester-long student teaching experience guided by master teachers.
Graduate Program The graduate program is designed to meet the needs of the busy teaching professional. Course work is offered in the late afternoon and evening as well as the summer. The goals of this rigorous program are to prepare students to interpret, use and contribute to the objective knowledge base of music education. Graduate students in this program have been recognized both regionally and nationally for their research through presentation and publication venues. Rowan music education alumni are leaders in professional organizations, active performers, published authors and composers, and prominent teachers in all regions of the United States.
