Background of the Program

Our society has experienced vast social change in a variety of organizational settings—political, community, and industry. Leadership education helps address the new challenges of an increasingly interconnected global system and plays a critical role in preparing college students as they move forward in their academic, professional, and personal endeavors. Therefore, leadership programs are becoming a more visible learning endeavor on many campuses today.

The leadership studies concentration at Rowan University was established as a result of the growing national demand for colleges and universities to provide undergraduate students with expanded opportunities for understanding both the complex nature of leadership and their own leadership capabilities. In the fall 1998, an interdisciplinary faculty group, together with student affairs professionals, sought to develop this program. The leadership concentration was officially instituted in May 2000. The first cohort of undergraduates, who was instrumental in helping establish the concentration, began course work in fall 2000. Most of these students will graduate from the program by spring 2001.

Rowan University offers numerous leadership development activities to undergraduates on an extracurricular basis. However, the leadership studies concentration provides a more holistic approach to leadership development, by interlocking the campus-wide efforts into an academic program. Rowan’s approval of Leadership Studies Concentration means that the university joins a select group of colleges and Universities nationwide in promoting a comprehensive program which helps prepare college students for the future.

The following team was responsible for developing and designing the concentration:

Dr. Kenneth Albone
Dr. Donald Bagin
Dr. James Coaxum
Dr. Richard Fopeano
Dr. Razelle Frankl
Jerome Harris
Dr. Cynthia M. Marconi-Hickman
