| Course Goals: To introduce to you basic
ideas regarding the collection, description and analysis of quantitative
data. It will provide the background for understanding and evaluating
statistical reports in both your professional and everyday life. It
will also equip you with statistical skills for further course work within
your major. Grading Policy: Two Exams 45% of grade Class Participation & quizzes 10% of grade Projects 20% of grade Final Exam 25% of grade |
| Text: The Basic Practice of Statistics
2nd ed. David S. Moore. W.H. Freeman & Co., New York, 2000. |
| Calculators: A graphing calculator, the Texas
Instruments TI-83 or TI-83 Plus, is essential for this course. You
are expected to have the calculator with you at every class period. If
you already have another calculator, the instructor will try to provide
some help in its use, but will not be able to spend significant time doing
so. See the departmental Calculator Policy at http://www.rowan.edu/mars/dept/math/calcpolicy0203.htm. |
| Topical Outline: I. Understanding Data(~5 weeks) Introduction to statistics and the TI-83 (Plus) calculator. Tabular and pictorial description, including histograms, stem and box plots. Central tendency and spread Relationships between variables: scatter plots, correlation and regression. EXAM 1, TBA II. Probability (~4 weeks) Sampling Randomness and probability Probability and sampling distributions III. Inference (~6 weeks) Estimates and confidence regions Significance tests and their interpretation Distributions, t procedures and confidence intervals Proportions FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM, May 6th, 6:30 PM |
| ATTENDANCE POLICY: Full attendance is expected
at every class meeting. Absence will affect your grade. There
will be no opportunity to make up missed quizzes or exams, unless sufficient
reasons are communicated to the instructor prior to the exam. WITHDRAWAL POLICY: If a withdrawal request is made before mid-semester (October 21st, 2003), the Registrar will enter a "W: on the students' transcript. A withdrawal request after this date will not be honored unless sufficient reason exists: if honored, the grade will be "WF" or "WP". CHEATING: Cheating on any test or assignment will not be tolerated. If it is determined that a student has cheated, a letter to that effect will be sent to his advisor and a grade "F" will be assigned for the course. In the case of identical papers without evidence as to who copied from whom, both papers will receive the grade "F". All students are honor bound to discourage and report cheating. ASSIGNMENTS: The student is responsible for all information covered in the reading assignments, whether it is covered in class or not. All assignments are expected to be completed by the next class meeting unless another due date is specifically announced. Although homework will not always be collected, quizzes will be used to help encourage homework to be done on time. GRADING POLICY: At the end of the semester, all grades for attendance, quizzes and homework will be tabulated and the score scaled. This will then be averaged with exam scores to arrive at the final score. |
