CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This course emphasizes the basic algebraic skills and techniques used
in business and social sciences. It will prepare students to take science
and mathematics courses in the general education bank. Topics included
are a review of algebra, solutions of linear, rational, and quadratic
functions, exponential notions, relations and functions, graphs, and determinants.
Use of calculators is required. Students are expected to have completed
the equivalent of developing Algebra Skills and Basic Algebra.

Intermediate Algebra, 10th Edition, by Marvin L. Bittinger, 2006, Pearson
Education, Inc., Addison Wesley
Calculator: The Texas Instruments Math Explorer Plus is the recommended
calculator for this course. Students may NOT use a cell phone as a calculator.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
This course attempts to serve two types of students: students entering
the College with deficiencies in high school algebra, and students who
have an extended gap between their high school education and their basic
algebraic skills. This course attempts to bring these and any other students
who feel the need to a minimum standard of algebraic proficiency that
will enable them to participate successfully in those courses that require
some algebraic knowledge.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Class participation requires that a student be in class, on time for class,
and prepared for class which includes having the homework completed.
EVALUATION
Graded Activity Percentage
Quizzes (highest 9 out of 10) 30%
3 Exams 45%
Comprehensive Final Exam 25%
Homework: Students are expected to complete homework assignments for
the following class.
Homework will not be collected but some problems will be discussed and
will be quiz problems.
Quizzes: Ten quizzes will be given in class. Quizzes cannot be made up.
The lowest quiz score will be dropped.
Exams: Exam #1 – Review of Basic Algebra (Chapter R) & Chapter
1
Exam #2 – Chapters 2, 3 & 4
Exam #3 – Chapters 5, 6, & 7
Final Exam – Cumulative
Exam Absences: Any student absent during an in-class scheduled examination
will receive a grade of zero for that exam unless a phone call was placed
to the professor before the exam and an excused absence (medical emergency,
death in the family) is given.
