Problem Competition Description
and Rules
1. Each month (on the day of the Math Club meeting), two pairs of problems will be posted on the Math Club website. The problems will be classified into “lower division” and “upper division” and you can compete in only one division (see below for the definitions of these divisions.) Your solutions for these problems must be submitted at the next Math Club meeting. You are not eligible to participate in this contest unless you are an active member of the Club and currently enrolled at Rowan University. Because we recognize that some people will not be able to attend every meeting, you will be able to make one submission per academic year (on or before the day of the next meeting) without attending the meeting. 2. You may submit answers to both problems. 3. Solutions to the previous month’s problems will be posted on the Math Club website after the meeting. No submissions will be accepted after the solutions have been posted. 4. Participants will receive 1 point for each correct answer (with the proper work shown). After the final meeting (in April), the high scorer in each division will receive $50 to order books from the mathematics publisher of her/his choice. The Math Department will place the order. Lesser prizes for second and third place will also be available. 5. Students competing in the lower division are classified as those who have completed or are currently enrolled in no more than one (1) 300 or 400-level mathematics course or Mathematics for Engineering Analysis II. Those who have completed or are currently enrolled in two or more 300 or 400-level mathematics courses will compete in the upper division. 6.
