Department of Secondary Education/Foundations of Education

 

Position:  

Assistant Professor of Education in the Department Secondary/Foundations of Education, College of Education.  This is a full time; tenure track position with emphasis in science.   The position is contingent upon budget appropriations.

 

Description:  The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate methods and pedagogy courses with a focus on high school and middle school science, at the Glassboro and Camden campuses as well as other off-campus locations.  In addition, the successful candidate will supervise teacher candidates and teaching interns in field placements, advise students in an NCATE-accredited teacher preparation program, and work in collaboration with colleagues in course and program development.  The successful candidate is expected to provide leadership in technology use in instruction and demonstrate an ability to develop relationships with P-12 districts in Professional Development Schools, associations, or partnerships that support the College of Education mission. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a productive service, research, and publishing agenda.

 

Qualifications:

Required - An earned terminal degree (Ed.D./Ph.D.) from an accredited institution of higher education by September 1, 2006.  The successful candidate will have an academic background in science and demonstrated experience in the teaching of science in P-12 settings.    Candidates with doctorates in a science field and considerable public school science teaching experience may be considered. ABDs with evidence of imminent completion may be considered.  The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate effective instructional practices in all areas of teaching (e.g., planning, assessment, pedagogy, content knowledge, creation of learning communities, and management) and a minimum of three years of recent P-12 teaching.  The successful candidate must possess superior communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills and a commitment to working in an environment devoted to collaboration, collegiality, professional development, and diversity.  They must also demonstrate commitment to working with P-12 districts and evidence of commitment to diversity as found in today’s public school classrooms.

 

Desired – It is desirable for the successful candidate to have expertise and experience in biological or physical science.  Strong applications will present a teaching/learning philosophy consistent with the Rowan University and College of Education missions, advanced computer literacy with demonstrated ability to infuse technology into instruction, experience supervising student teachers, familiarity with learning community principles, familiarity with P-12 scope and sequence pedagogy, evidence of scholarly potential, membership and participation in appropriate professional organizations, recent study of the standards movement, and familiarity with NCATE, INTASC, and NSTA  standards.

General Information: 

The College of Education is currently moving into a new state of the art Education Hall.  In addition, the Departments of Elementary/Early Childhood Education and Secondary Education are merging in order to better serve the needs of student preparing for initial certification as P-12 teachers.
