Welcome to the South Jersey Mathematics Partnership (SJMP)

Dr. Eric Milou, Professor of Mathematics
Principal Investigator/Program Director

The South Jersey Math Partnership at Rowan University is an intensive professional development project involving Rowan University and more than 30 school districts in South Jersey.  The Partnership will improve the quality of middle grades mathematics and science teachers by deepening their understanding of mathematical and science content and pedagogy.  The Partnership will also increase the number of highly-qualified teachers, teachers obtaining Elementary Certification with Subject Matter Specialization in Mathematics or Science.  Moreover, the Partnership will enhance teachers’ and students’ use of technology and most importantly, improve student achievement in mathematics and science.

Three cohorts (100 teachers) of grades 3-8 teachers will participate in SJMP.  Grades 3-4 teachers will begin the project during the summer of 07 with an intensive, two-week summer math and science integrated institute that will revolve around robotics.  Teachers will continue the project in the fall 07 and select a graduate course (15 weekly classes) in algebra or astronomy.  In spring 08, teachers will select a course in geometry or biology.  Moreover, teachers will also receive visitations in their classrooms by project staff.
