Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee Rowan University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) mission is to assure the safe and ethical treatment of animals in research. Federal and university regulations require that all research involving animals conducted by Rowan faculty, staff, and students be reviewed and approved by the IACUC before initiation. The Rowan IACUC is comprised of Rowan faculty, a certified veterinarian, as well as a community representative. Currently the IACUC meets on an "as needed" basis. Meeting Information Policies Training Personnel working with animals in their research should receive initial training in the form of Principal Investigator (PI) instructor led training. The instructor led training will be specific to the animal(s) identified in the IACUC application (research protocol), and the content of the training should include at a minimum how to handle, manage, and care for animals in the lab and in research. The PI of a protocol is responsible for ensuring that personnel working with animals have received initial training that is adequate and appropriate as it relates to the research protocol. Rowan utilizes the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) program to provide continuing education and as a supplement to instructor led training. CITI program is provided via the Internet, module based, and provides a record of class progress. Once an end-user has set-up an account in CITI, the training is available on the Internet and keeps record of module progress so that an end-user can stop midway through the module and return at a later date to complete the module. Currently, mice, rats, fish, and frogs, toads and amphibians are modules available to researchers. Additional modules include IACUC Community Member, Antibody Production, Working with Animals in Biomedical Research (Refresher Course), Aseptic Surgery, and Minimizing Pain and Distress in Mice and Rats. All personnel are strongly encouraged to take any module that is/may be necessary to complete their work and as directed by the PI and the IACUC committee. All personnel, including Prinicpal Investigators, working with animals in a research capacity are highly encouraged and strongly recommended to take and complete the "Working with the IACUC Course" prior to submitting the IACUC Application.
