Strategic Planning at Rowan University:
Toward the "Responsive and Responsible University"
Welcome to Rowan University’s Strategic Planning website!
While maintaining its fundamental mission, the University has gone through a period of rapid yet monumental change. The Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act, signed by the Governor of New Jersey in August 2012, designated Rowan as the second comprehensive public research institution in the State and integrated the School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM) in Stratford, New Jersey. With the addition of RowanSOM, Rowan became one of only two public universities in the United States with medical schools offering both the M.D. and D.O. degrees, the other being Michigan State University. RowanSOM joins the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), itself a relatively new addition to the University. Authorized by an Executive Order of the Governor in 2009, CMSRU welcomed its inaugural class in August 2012. These remarkable developments were preceded by an earlier wave of progress initiated by the $100 million gift bestowed on the University by Henry Rowan in 1992 and culminating in the opening of the College of Engineering in 1996, now nationally recognized for its innovative curriculum.
To optimize these new opportunities and the many competitive advantages the University has gained, President Ali A. Houshmand launched a new strategic planning initiative. In January 2013, the President’s Cabinet developed the One-Page Strategic Plan to anchor strategic planning across the University and promote alignment, agility, and accountability. The One-Page Strategic Plan is a contextual model informed by contemporary strategic planning insights and specifically the concept of the “responsive and responsible university.”
This website will be updated as the University's strategy develops and progresses.
