The school program at Edelman Planetarium is designed to meet four goals: (1) Encourage students to feel the excitement of scientific knowledge and discovery; (2) Suggest to them that science is something that they can understand and even do; (3) Show them that the universe is more than what they can see on TV or in front of their houses; (4) Teach them facts about astronomy.
School shows generally include two sections. One section is a multimedia program, using the planetarium hardware to tell a story about some aspect of the universe. The second is a "live" presentation of the current night sky, including stars, constellations, planets, and interesting telescopic objects. The two sections together generally take up about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.
Nominal show times are Monday through Friday at 9:30 and 11:00 AM, though we can usually accommodate requests for other times, such as early afternoons.
Admission fees are normally $3 per person, for both children and adults; however, due to a generous ongoing donation by Jean and Ric Edelman, school admission fees will not be charged for anyone attending with a school or youth group.
Parking can be a problem, especially for individual cars: Rowan is a busy place! The planetarium director will notify Rowan Parking Services that you will be arriving, but it does not hurt to call Parking Services directly (856.256.4575) to get the latest information on construction and campus events for that day. If you use buses, you can drop off the children by Robinson Hall, and the planetarium is a short walk to the Science Hall on the other side; buses will probably need to park off-campus during the show. Campus maps are available at http://www.rowan.edu/map.
We are not able to provide a place to eat sack lunches, nor is the school food service available for large groups from outside the Rowan campus.
To make reservations, call Keith Johnson at 856-256-4389 during business hours, or send him an email. You can check for availability of dates on our calendar of currently-scheduled events (note that boxes labeled "School show" are slots that are ALREADY assigned; you need to find a slot that does NOT have a box showing).
Click here for a list of the various shows available. Note that "Planet Patrol" and "Friendly Stars" will probably not be available until the fall 2012 semester. We'll be obtaining new shows for middle- and high-school classes as the year progresses, and will post them here as that happens.
