Specialization,
Concentration, Minor, or Achievement Certificate Proposal Format
A one-page
abstract (separate page) in narrative form must address the following:
- Title and
Sponsor(s).
- Need for
the Program.
- Relationship
to Department and School.
- Summary
of the curriculum.
- Implementation
time frame.
- Resources
required (Staff, space, non-salary).
Details
- Title of
the Proposal.
- Sponsor(s):
Persons or groups that are to have administrative responsibilities
for the program.
- Scope or
size of the program.
- Relationship
to curriculum: general education, core area, elective. Include
a description of how the program implementation will affect other
department and school offerings.
- Prerequisites
or eligibility. MUST INCLUDE HEGIS NUMBER OF ALL PREREQUISITES.
- Suggested
time and scale of implementation.
- Resource
requirements (equipment, library, staff, space, etc.) This section
should include a description of any costs that will be incurred
by implementation of the proposal.
- Recommended
Library Resources (see p.7): Provide a list of resources required
to implement the program and any predicted resources for future
needs. If resources are not adequate please specify how this issue
will be addressed. The department's library liaison should be
consulted.
Rationale
Statements
specifically indicating the proposal's merits as they relate to
the goals of the college and the directions of the sponsoring department(s).
What is the appropriateness and significance of the program?)
Essence
of the Specialization /Concentration/ Minor/Achievement Certificate
- Major goals
of the program.
- Specific
objectives of the program.
- Structure
of Organization: identification of courses with brief course descriptions,
credit to be given, sequence of course work (lower and upper level),
requirements and prerequisites.
Administration
Details of
the role of each group/department. This item should be especially
detailed for concentrations since they involve more than one department
and/or college.
Results
of Consultation
- Letters
of consultation MUST be included from all departments or programs
(NOT INDIVIDUALS) that have similar course content or might otherwise
be affected by this proposal. If the proposal is inter-disciplinary,
evidence concerning consultation with all departments potentially
involved must be included.
- Additional
consultation should be solicited from any individual on campus
who might have expertise relative to the program. List the names
of all persons from departments and/or disciplines consulted.
Attach a statement about the results (pro and con) of the consultation.
- Attach
copies of any written consultations. Include consultations both
support and non-supportive.
- Consulted
parties may appear in person at the Open Hearing.
New
Courses
- Include
proposals for new courses needed for the specialization/concentration/minor/
achievement certification using the appropriate format. The proposal
cannot be acted upon by the Curriculum Committee if new courses
are listed but not included with the proposal.
- Tentative
or conditional approval can be granted to specializations, concentrations,
minors, achievement certificates requiring the development of
new courses. Final approval of the program will be authorized
only after complete curricular approval of all courses included
in the program has been granted.
