RU Admissions - ideas in action
RU Ready to Learn More? Geography - So much more than just reading maps! If you're interested in not only studying the world around you, but also visualizing, drawing and environmentally planning its growth, then Geography is your major. Through your study you'll earn a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, and have the opportunity for an interdisciplinary concentration in Cartography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) earning a certificate in Cartography and GIS. The programs integrate theory and practice, blending time in the class with time in the lab with time in the field. You'll use the same state-of-the-art computerized mapping equipment used by professional geographers and regional and city planners. Most courses involve a field component, for example, spending half of the time in the classroom and the other half in the lab making computer-drawn maps, or traversing the Eastern U.S., picking up abstract concepts to apply, analyze and map back in the lab. Geography graduates follow careers as regional planners, environmental analysts, cartographers, GIS technologists and geologists. Those who aspire to teach often pursue Geography along with an Elementary Education degree or Subject Matter Teaching Certification.
