Communication: Writing Arts - Discover the power of creativity!

If you want to write, but your interests go beyond newspaper reporting, then Writing Arts is the major for you. Writing Arts covers other genres of writing such as expository and creative writing, Web-based writing, writing for electronic communities, business and technical writing, and theories of composing and editing.

Some of your courses include The Writer's Mind , focusing on the composing process from brainstorming to writer's block, and Writing for the Workplace covering forms of writing used in many areas such as law, medicine and business.

As a Writing Arts student at Rowan you'll have many opportunities to practice and enhance your craft. You can write for or edit The Whit, Rowan's student newspaper, or submit poetry and short fiction to Avant , the student literary quarterly, or write feature articles, opinion pieces or satire for Venue , the student opinion magazine. WGLS-FM, the award-winning University radio station also looks for copywriters. If you're interested in advertising or public relations copywriting, you can join PRSSA or the Advertising Club. And, if screenwriting is your aspiration, you can join Cinema Workshop.

The Writing Arts department (The Department of Composition and Rhetoric) sponsors two additional publications: Glassworks - featuring the best of student writing from around campus, and Asphodel - a national literary magazine sponsored by Rowan University.

Need more writing? How about an internship with a magazine, newspaper, TV news station, publishing house or other company? The world opens wide for well-prepared writers.
