EPA honors Rowan’s environmental efforts The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this week marked Earth Day by honoring Rowan University and nine other individuals and organizations for their outstanding efforts to protect the environment in New Jersey, according to the EPA. Alan J. Steinberg, regional administrator of the EPA, presented Environmental Quality Awards to the winners during a ceremony in the agency’s Manhattan offices. Steinberg said, “EPA applauds the tireless dedication of the award winners, who are true environmental champions. Their extraordinary contributions make our world a better place and remind us that individuals really can make a difference.” John Imperatore, director of Facilities, Resource Management received the award on behalf of Rowan, which was recognized for its achievements in last year’s RecycleMania competition, a national 10-week award program to see which colleges can generate the least amount of municipal solid waste or achieve the highest recycling rate. Rowan placed third out of 87 colleges for waste minimization in its effort, which was under the leadership of Imperatore and Rowan’s student recycling coordinator, Kimberly Jones. Rowan fostered a reduction in solid waste amounting to more than 36 pounds per person and was the only college in the EPA’s Region 2 (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) to place in the top five during the competition.
