June 30, 2005

The New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (NJHEPS) has awarded the first-ever Advancement Fellowship to Rowan University electrical and computer engineering associate professor Dr. Peter M. Jansson in recognition of his contributions and leadership to furthering energy sustainability in New Jersey. The fellowship is valued at $17,000.

During his two-month fellowship this summer, Jansson will lead the development of a business plan for NJHEPS and help revitalize and increase the scope and membership of the organization. Ultimately, NJHEPS' goal is to get all New Jersey colleges and universities to reduce greenhouse gasses and serve as a model for campuses and industry nationwide.

Jansson, of Pitman, is a vice president of NJHEPS and worked in the electric power industry for 20 years for Atlantic Energy (now Conectiv) before pursuing his Ph.D. on the topic of innovation in electricity at the University of Cambridge.

He joined the College of Engineering faculty at Rowan University in 2001. His teaching interests are focused on advanced power and sustainability. His research interests include innovation in electricity, renewable energy technologies, Mach's principle, industrial sustainability, environmental management systems and technologies, business transformation and strategic planning, innovation and new product development.

NJHEPS is a consortium of 40 New Jersey higher education institutions whose mission is to transform the higher education community to consistently practice sustainability and to more effectively contribute to the world's emerging understanding of sustainability through teaching, research, outreach, operations and community life, according to its website.
