Facts

We have compiled a list of some interesting facts about Recycling at Rowan as well as some of the things we have accomplished.

  • Rowan University is dedicated to energy efficiency Rowan became an energy star partner in 2004.
  • Dr. Farish was the first  NJ University President to sign the American College President’s Climate Change Challenge.
  • Rowan purchases 25% renewable energy including energy from the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm.
  • In 2007 the purchase reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 6,338 metric tons the equivalent of planting 5,800 trees.
  • From June 2006 to June 2007 Rowan recycled 131 metric tons of material saving about 3,670 cubic yards of landfill space.
  • Rowan recently added 17 new recycling stations on campus, and is currently planning for more.
  • In 2003, Rowan University recycled 98 tons of paper resulting in:
    • 1,960 trees saved
    • 686,000 gallons of H₂O saved
    • 294 cubic yards landfill space avoided
    • 5,980 lbs. of air pollution avoided
    • enough energy saved to supply 49 homes for a year

Fun Facts:

  • One ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees and 2.5 barrels of oil!
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves the energy equivalent of six ounces of gasoline, that's enough energy to run a TV for 4 hours.
  • Recycling one glass jar saves enough energy to light one 100 watt light bulb for four hours.
  • Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings and 60 pounds less of air pollution!
  • 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of steel. In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes!
