At Rowan we are a community in every sense of the word.
We are a learning community engaged in collaborative projects ranging from life saving research to a common reading program. We are a team. Our Profs are championship winning NCAA Division III athletes and members of club sports such as Rugby and Ice Hockey. And when we’re not on the field or in the classroom, we are a service oriented community, participating in blood drives, food drives, coat drives, even house-building drives, literally building communities.
But our Prof pride doesn’t end there. We are extremely proud of our physical community. State of the art academic buildings and housing are simply the beginning of the what’s ahead of us just down the road. Rowan Boulevard, a $300 million project linking our main campus to Glassboro’s historic downtown, continues to grow.
On Rowan's Camden campus, our 40-year commitment to urban education is thriving. Cooper Medical School of Rowan University welcomed its inaugural class to our new medical community this past Fall and work is underway to renovate the historic First Camden National Trust Bank into the new academic home for Rowan's Camden Campus.
We aren’t any old community. We are Rowan and we look forward to welcoming new Prof’s to the neighborhood. Learn more about all that Rowan has to offer you.
Shelter from the storm
Compassion and can-do spirit came through during the hurricane
The sandbags are gone. So are the cots, the bagged lunches, the squirming kids and beleagured adults. The din of 1,100 people crammed together in a storm has given way to the daily rhythm of campus life. But over one year after Hurricane Irene threatened New Jersey, the story of her visit echoes in our history and hearts in a way we never expected.
In just a few critical hours, Rowan's late-August plans to welcome 1,200 new students for fall semester turned into emergency hospitality for evacuees from Atlantic City and Cape May counties forced to leave their homes ahead of the storm.
The photo slideshow on your left tells a bit of the story and hint at the magnitude of the challenge of being the largest Red Cross shelter in New Jersey's history at the time.
"What I have seen us accomplish together during this storm was incredible. I cannot imagine being more proud of our volunteers and this institution."
- President Ali Houshmand
What the photos can't show is the climate of compassion that kept volunteers going hour after hour; the can-do attitude that fed, clothed, entertained and protected evacuees under dire conditions; and the intensity of the volunteer effort that drew together alumni, students, employees and their families and friends in an extraordinary exhibit of GSC-Rowan spirit.
In the late 80's we called Glassboro State "The College that Cares." Corny as it sounds now, Irene helped us prove the sentiment is still true.

Rowan Continues to Help in Aftermath of Latest Storm
October 29 and 30, 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated the New Jersey coastline and much of North Jersey, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity, and in worst-case scenarios, with damaged or destroyed homes and businesses. In some areas, residents may not be able to return to their homes for up to six months.
New Jersey is in trouble and Rowan University is here to help again. Learn more about how the Rowan community has heeded the call to action by visiting the Rowan Relief website. (http://www.rowan.edu/rowanrelief)
