Early Decision Program

The Admissions Committee offers the option of applying through an Early Decision Program (EDP) intended for highly competitive applicants who consider Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine to be their first choice medical school. Applicants are prohibited from applying to other medical schools until they receive their EDP decision notification. Applicants who are accepted in the EDP are expected to attend SOM. The full tuition deposit will be due within two weeks of the acceptance notification. Applicants who are not selected to interview for the EDP will automatically be considered in the general applicant pool.

Early Decision Program Requirements:

  • Minimum 3.6 cumulative grade point average
  • Minimum 28 cumulative MCAT score
  • Meet general application requirements
  • Indicate on SOM Secondary application that applicant is applying for the EDP
  • Submit Letter of Intent to the Office of Admissions with Secondary Application stating that SOM is the applicant’s first choice Medical School

Applicants who desire to apply through the EDP must meet the minimum criteria above; no exceptions.  Applicants who do not qualify for the EDP are still encouraged to apply early through our rolling admissions process.  Please see the chart below for a comparison of our two admissions processes.

Early Decision Program Deadlines:

  • Submit AACOMAS primary Application by August 15
  • All application materials must be received by SOM by August 31 (including the SOM Secondary application, application fee, MCAT score, and letters of recommendation)
  • All EDP applicants will receive their decision notification by October 21. Decisions will be one of the following:
  • Acceptance, tuition deposit due by Nov. 4
  • Rejection by the Admissions Committee (application not eligible to be considered in the general applicant pool)
  • Decision on application has been deferred and will be considered in the general applicant pool

Why apply to SOM’s Early Decision Program?

The EDP helps the Admissions Committee identify highly qualified applicants who are serious about attending SOM. Applicants to this program are guaranteed early and special consideration in the application cycle. Students admitted through EDP enjoy the remaining year knowing they are already “in”.

The Early Decision Program vs. RowanSOM’s Rolling Admissions Process

Early Decision Program

Rolling Admissions

Is there a minimum required Grade Point Average?

Yes, 3.6 cumulative GPA

No minimum cutoff; the average cumulative GPA for accepted students last year was 3.6

Is there a minimum required MCAT score?

Yes, 28 overall score

No minimum cutoff; the average overall score for accepted students last year was 28

When do I need to apply?

EDP applicants must submit AACOMAS primary Application by August 15.  All application materials must be received by SOM by August 31 (including the SOM Secondary application, letter of intent, application fee, MCAT score, and letters of recommendation).

Applications are reviewed as they are received; therefore, the rolling admissions process favors the early applicant.  Applicants may begin submitting their AACOMAS application in June.  All materials must be received by March 15.

Am I able to update my application?

Yes, however, all application materials must be received by August 31.  Updates received after that date are not guaranteed full consideration for the EDP program.  However, EDP applicants who receive a “Deferred Decision” will automatically be considered in the rolling admissions pool.

Yes, applicants are encouraged to submit updates to AACOMAS, including new MCAT scores and grades, throughout the application cycle.  Applicants who are not initially deemed eligible for an interview will be re-reviewed periodically by the committee as updates are received.

When will interviews occur?

Interviews will begin as soon as possible and be completed by October 18.

Interviews typically begin early September and conclude by mid-April.  Applicants may be invited to interview at any point during the application cycle.

When will I be informed of my admissions decision?

All EDP applicants will receive their decision notification no later than October 21.

Applicants who receive an interview will typically be informed of the committee’s decision within 4 weeks after their interview.  When the interview process concludes, those applicants who were not invited for an interview will be informed of a final admissions decision.

If accepted, when will I need to make my final decision and submit my tuition deposit?

Students accepted into the EDP are expected to attend SOM and will be required to submit their tuition deposit by November 4.

Applicants accepted September through December will have until December 15 to make their final decision and submit a tuition deposit.  Applicants accepted January through May will have two weeks from the date that they receive their acceptance packet to submit a tuition deposit.  Applicants accepted off the waitlist (June through August) are asked to submit their deposit as soon as possible.
