About Journei

Journei Head ShotJournei Hutchings is an 8th grader at Voorhees Middle School, and was born and raised in Voorhees, NJ. She is a Cadette Girl Scout and has been a member of Girl Scouts of USA and WAGGS for the past nine years. As a Cadette, Journei is a Silver Award candidate and has developed a community wide Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) program. She is reaching out to 100 middle school aged girls (11-14) from various communities to come for a day of science and learn about careers in S.T.E.M. She has partnered with Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ where the girls will experience hands on activities with professionals from various S.T.E.M. fields. In 5th grade as a Junior Girl Scout, Journei worked extremely hard and received her Girl Scout Bronze Award in November of 2011. For her Bronze Award, Journei solicited her entire elementary school, E.T. Hamilton Elementary, to make Thanksgiving Day thank you cards for military men and women who were being deployed from Ft. Dix, NJ after the holidays. She collected over 400 homemade cards and 40 handmade posters. Journei along with her Girl Scout team decorated the banquet hall with the posters for the soldiers’ surprise Thanksgiving Day Dinner and placed two cards under every place setting for the soldiers. In 2011 and 2012 Journei received the Presidential Volunteer Gold Award from President Barak Obama for volunteering over one hundred hours each year for her various community service activities, and she is a nominee for the same award for 2014. Her demonstration of leadership within Girl Scouts earned her the Girl Scout Leadership Torches as a Junior and Cadette. She was selected to and performed for the All South Jersey Elementary School Honors Band in 5th grade, playing the B♭ clarinet and 6th grade, playing the bass clarinet. This winter she was nominated, selected and performed in the Olympic Conference Junior High School Honors Band as the first chair, bass clarinetist. Journei has maintained high academic achievements at Voorhees Middle School of Principal's Honor Roll and Honor Roll.
