Letter from the Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The Emergency Medicine Residency and the combined Emergency Medicine/ Internal Medicine residency at RowanSOM exists to provide the highest quality post graduate education in the specialty of Emergency Medicine for graduates of Osteopathic medical schools. These residencies now have a rich tradition of excellence that dates back to their inception in 1993. Based at the Kennedy Health System (KHS), a three hospital system that provides leadership in healthcare in southern New Jersey while maintaining its rich Osteopathic heritage and philosophy, the residency program combines the teaching environment of an on campus osteopathic medical school and 150 residents with a unique community hospital setting. Research in basic sciences and clinical medicine are available and conducted at the Stratford main campus of the medical school noted for its prestigious grant history.

During the past 10 years, the residency program has undergone numerous refinements to insure the graduating resident enters the workforce with the knowledge base, clinical training and technical skills to practice emergency medicine efficiently and competently in any environment ranging with university teaching hospitals to rural community hospitals with little subspecialty back-up. Our graduates practice in more than ten states with several in Director Ship positions. Their confidence and continuing achievements affirm the quality of their residency training.

The emergency medicine faculty is comprised of 20 residency trained DO's and MD's with long histories of teaching experience , many of whom have national level credentials in academic medicine and research. The weekly 5 hour didactic program combines resident case presentations with core content lectures, evidence based lectures by guest professors in diverse subspecialties, with journal article review.

The base hospitals provide exposure to ED volumes ranging from 26,000 to 60,000 annual visits. A pediatric ED is based at the high volume Washington Township Campus with training provided by PEM experienced pediatricians. A new Primary Stroke Center will open soon at the Cherry Hill Campus to provide timely comprehensive stroke care to the community. Bedside clinical ultrasonography is now available at two divisions with training addressed during radiology rotation and at the bedside by trained faculty. The KHS base hospitals provide the primary bedside clinical teaching experience with a patient acuity and diversity that meets and exceeds the AOA and RRC training requirements. To compliment this training out rotations in level one trauma, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Intensive Care are provided through well established and respected level one trauma and tertiary care centers.

The RowanSOM EM and EM/IM residency programs welcome your interest and prospective candidacy. Please do not hesitate to contact our Residency Coordinator if you have any questions, and one of our Program directors will contact you in a timely manner.
