Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Overview

Residency training in General Obstetrics, Gynecologic Surgery, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Urogynecologic Surgery is primarily conducted at Kennedy University Health System located in Washington Township, New Jersey. Our residents are provided excellent surgical training and early hands on opportunities in not only the Labor Room, but also the Operating Room, which is what makes our program different. Our faculty is known for their willingness to teach and their commitment to education. All Gynecologic Oncology rotations are completed at Cooper University Health System located less than 30 minutes from KUH-Washington Township Hospital. Our residents have the opportunity to work with the best Gyn Oncology team in South Jersey on their very busy service. A wide variety of pathology is seen during these months on service with the Cooper University Ob/Gyn Residents and Gyn Oncology Fellows.

The RowanSOM ObGyn residency strictly adheres to the 80 hour work week. We accomplish this primarily though our weekly night float system. Resident call averages one week of night float (Sunday through Thursday) and 1-2 weekend shifts per month.

Ambulatory resident continuity clinics are conducted in off-site locations at Stratford and Washington Township, NJ. Residents recruit a patient following starting in their internship and follow them through their 4 years of training. Each resident is assigned one half day each week of office time. This block is completed under the supervision of a single attending who follows the patients along with the resident over time. This consistency of outpatient supervision adds a depth to our residents’ education in office based practice.

Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine is located in Stratford, NJ and is a modern facility with superb resources to complement the clinical residency program. The medical library is of extremely high quality and the online resources it provides are extensive. Nationally known scientists are housed in the research building at the Stratford campus and provide an opportunity for the resident inclined to pursue basic science research. Dr. Xinhua Chen, of the RowanSOM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, recently received a $1.8 million federal grant to lead a five-year study that examines the role diet plays in the higher incidence of preterm delivery among African American and Hispanic women. RowanSOM also sponsors residency training in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, EM/IM, Otolaryngology & Facial Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Urology, Orthopedics, and Family Practice as well as many subspecialty fellowships. The ability to work with trainees from so many different specialties broadens our residents’ educational experience and provides a multitude of opportunities for patient care.

From Our Residents

"What's great about our residency is it's dedication to building a firm foundation in ob/gyn. From day one, residents are exposed to obstetrics, high risk deliveries, gyn surgeries and even subspecialty cases ." This philosophy allows first year residents to begin to develop surgical skills as well as keep fourth year residents fresh in obstetrics and gynecology surgeons - Deborah White, DO, PGY4

"The residents and staff are like a family. We have a great work environment where everyone lends a hand." — Casey Danielsen, DO, PGY5

"RowanSOM was a great place to train not only because of the experience and education provided but because of the working environment. The residents and attendings were always a pleasure to work with. This program prides itself on working together as a team in a supportive fashion to reach a common goal of high quality standards, excellent patient care and strive toward academic excellence." - Jennifer Gaide, DO, (Graduated 6/30/12)
