Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
 

General Degree Requirements

Ph.D. – 70 credit program: 40 credits of coursework and minimum of 30 credits of thesis reseach.

Students will be introduced to basic biomedical science through at least 40 course credits of relevant graduate level course work beyond the baccalaureate including two core courses, several skill and focus (elective) courses, and at least 3 semesters of thesis research (30 credits) in the biomedical sciences. Students must earn a 3.00 or higher in each core course (Graduate Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Cell) and an overall academic average of 3.00 or higher in a minimum of 70 credits to earn the Ph.D. degree. The Ph.D. degree is awarded on the basis of achievement in a wide range of course work; experience in classroom teaching and laboratory instruction; an advisory meeting to determine the preparedness of a student entering his/her second year of study; a comprehensive qualifying examination evaluating the breadth of background knowledge and the ability for independent thinking; intensive research experience during which the candidate demonstrates ability to initiate, perform, and analyze original experimental work; a written dissertation; and a public defense of the dissertation through a final oral examination. The requirements for the Ph.D. Degree must be completed within seven years regardless of full-time or part-time status. The student must be in full time residence (20 credit hours per academic year) for at least one academic year during the dissertation research.

MSMPI - 30 credit program: 25 credits of coursework and 5 credits of thesis reseach.

All students will be required to pass the following 4 designated core courses (12 credits) and earn a cumulative 3.00 or higher grade point average in the core courses and overall.

Fundamentals of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (I) (3 credits)
Fundamentals of Cell Biology (II) (3 credits)
Molecular Pathology and Immunology Seminar (2 credits)
Topics in Molecular Pathology and Immunology (4 credits)

MBS - 30 credit program: 30 credits of coursework for MBS degree

MSBS - 30 credit program: 25 credits of coursework and 5 credits of thesis reseach for MS (thesis) degree

All students will be required to pass the following 4 designated core courses (12 credits) and earn a cumulative 3.00 or higher grade point average in the core courses and overall.

Fundamentals of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (I) (3 credits)
Fundamentals of Cell Biology (II) (3 credits)
Fundamentals of System Biology (III) (3 credits)
Seminar in the Biomedical Sciences (3 credits)


Certificate of Biomedical Sciences - 18 credit program: 18 credits of coursework

All students will be required to pass the following 3 required courses (9 credits) and earn a cumulative 3.00 or higher grade point average overall.

Fundamentals of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (I) (3 credits)
Fundamentals of Cell Biology (II) (3 credits)
