NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute (NMI) helps patients gain function and quality of life

We will never get away from being a pain center, but now we have incorporated so much more,” said Dr. Richard Jermyn, Director of the NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute (NMI) at the UMDNJSchool of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford. “Our focus isn’t on diagnosis, but on treatment. Our job is to help patients regain function and quality of life.” The list of conditions treated and the services available at NMI are extensive. Aside from chronic pain, patients with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, wound care, traumatic brain injury, gait dysfunction, headaches, balance disorders, post stroke syndrome, spinal cord injury, back pain and nerve injuries of any sort, including peripheral neuropathy, can find help at the NMI. The physicians and staff at the NMI can offer a multidisciplinary approach where the type of expert treatment provided relies on the patient’s unique needs.
Treatment options are extensive and include medical pain management, acupuncture, Botox injections, osteopathic manipulative medicine, and tendon transfer surgery of lower and upper extremities.

“We’ve gotten people who have been wheelchair bound almost all of their lives to the point where they can stand again and walk with assistance,” Dr. Jermyn said. “We’ve been able to help patients who have had joints and muscles frozen by disease or injury, including patients whose illnesses have made them bedridden for years. For those patients, just being able to use a wheelchair can mean a huge change in their health and quality of life.”

Another service of the NMI is a fitness center that is geared toward individuals with physical limitations or medical disease. Although the center is available to anyone, the trainers there have the medical expertise to offer added assistance to older individuals and those with conditions such as pain, emphysema and cardiac disease.

“Anyone with a physical disability, whether it’s mild or not, can come to our fitness center and feel comfortable,” Dr. Jermyn said. “People with physical ailments who come here will feel well, not sick.”
